ROW Turbo converted to US DOT spec's would make no sense at all! Why would we spend bucks for a non DOT machine when we have an abundance of domestic DOT product?
If your questions relates to " Ruf" for example please be advised Ruf is US DOT certified and certainly not 'gray market.." The 930 series Porsche circa 1984 would be an example of gray market conversion which was at that point in time a thriving business! Hope that helps! Ruf is serviceable at an Porsche dealer.Obviously some dealers are beer than others! Chad, you have some bay area thoughts about shops thatt would service a Ruf machine?

My friend used to have a RoW TT and I thought that the hp was 425 vs 400 for the US.

Besides the power, I think the other difference besides what you described include suspension, rear fog lights, and maybe gearbox.

I've been looking into this importing business and something sounds fishy to me.

Euro spec turbo had 408bhp standard, but there were options from the factory for 430 and 450hp.

No warts on front bumper? You mean the little black bumperettes? As i understand it from NHTSA if the car is imported through the normal channels it will have had to have the bumperettes installed.
Also, it would have had to have a mph speedo put in (which also has km/h in smaller writing, whereas the km/h speedo has no mph markings).

Oh, and the side markers on the front wings, just in front of the door shutline, are actually side repeaters for the indicators (flashers).

Check also that the 2nd dial in from the left (with oil temp and oil pressure) has been replaced. ROW would have (O) and (!), whereas US versions have something like (Brake) and (Park).

If the above changes haven't been done then it's possible there's no EPA certificate either (this has to be done before customs release the car). This means that you may have trouble registering the car in a different state.

I'd be careful with this...

Hope this helps.

Thumbs down

Kenneth,
I wud encourage you to avoid the Euros - Altho some might disagree, my experience is that these cars are consistently misrepresented. The milage is usually not accurate and the cars are run to death over there. Even if you believe the miles, I think they are put on in much harsher conditions. Avoid the great deal - when you are all done, you will have the car, not the deal. Just my two cents.
