'96 vs. '97 993 TT
What are the mechanical differences between the 96 and 97 993TT? I've read somewhere that the 97 has a stronger 1st gear. Are there any other mechanical differences that I should consider before purchasing either? Thank you!

Doug,
That's pretty much it mechanically. The 97's also use better high-pressure hoses from the turbos to the intercooler, and uses an ECU that can be modified where as the 96's can not. Additionally, many of the 96's need to have a fan pulley update.

Doug,
While the '97 has a stronger 1st gear, it is not strong enough to withstand 6000 rpm dumps. This is something that needs to be checked on any TT, regardless of year. The good part is that if a car has the problem, it is not likely to have doen any other damage. That is an opportunity to get the price adjusted, replace the gear and add a light flywheel for better performance.
