Post Ruf Turbo R on Pistonheads

This may be old news to some of you but found this write up on a UK 993tt with Turbo R motor:

<a href="http://www.pistonheads.com/porsche/default.asp?storyId=6479" target="_blank">http://www.pistonheads.com/porsche/default.asp?storyId=6479</a>

I like the bit about where the author thinks a 996tt X50 will be quicker than a Turbo R over 150mph <img border="0" alt="[hiha]" title="" src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" />

Thanks TB,

Great little article. Did you read the Car and Driver Supercar Shootout at the end of 2001? I have a copy of it somewhere. They lined the turbo R up against some serious metal (996tt, Z06, Viper etc.) and it came out on top. One particular verb stood out - in acceleration and braking (0-100-0) the Ruf devastated the opposition.

The race drivers who helped assess the cars did say the 993 was tricky at the limit though, prone to wandering at top speed. This wasn't a fault of the 996tt. They concluded that the Turbo R needed a professional to exploit its outer limits.

God knows what they'd have made of your car

tb993tt,

Thanks for the article. I haven't read that.

I know the Ruf Turbo R is a bit faster than a 996TT with FVD ECU and Ruf exhaust up to 150 MPH (which is faster than a 996TT X50). If I ever have a chance to compare over 150 MPH, I'll let you know!

i know from first hand experience that my R against the stock 996tt is a world of difference... on the straights, not a chance in hell. Each drag to the end of a gear yielded at least three to four car lengths all the from third to six
if just a ecu and exhaust can bring a 996 to that level, then it must say alot about the tunability of the water cooled engines (no pun intended)

I was also surprised about the 996TT tunability. Some of this comes down to the 4 valves and variable cam timing. Some is related to the better aerodynamics.

This is also seen in Ruf's R Turbo, which is faster than the Turbo R.

However, given the extensive mods made to the 996 TT by Porsche, the difference is very slight.

However, I've yet to compare my Turbo R to an R Turbo. I hear 0-100 is about 7.1 seconds in the 550 HP R Turbo. This is about 7.7 seconds in the Turbo R. Pretty close with two less cams, 12 less valves, less aerodynamic, one less intercooler, no variable cam and no water!

superyellowfly,

What is a Ruf CTS2 (i.e., body style and engine type)?

Also, what's in your Promotive, and how does it compare to your Ruf?

Bill, it was good seeing you this past Saturday, I can attest to the fact that the Turbo R is FAST!!!

It leaves the M5 at full throttle in the dust, especially at higher speeds, the gap just increases and increases. It frustrated me so much I wanted to stick a Supercharger on my car to get 600 hp just to keep up. I had to remind myself that my GT3 is coming soon.

I hope you will be able to make the Malibu Run in July. I would really like to see how the Turbo R compares to Wilber's Protomotive 996TT.

Hamann7,

Thanks for inviting us to your run! Me and my wife had a great time. Your cars look like they were right off the showroom floor!

It would be fun to compare the Turbo R against Wilber's. Maybe we can rent Willow for a day and really do some good tests with some very fast cars. It often seems our cars are just too fast for the street!

Bill,
I would be interested to see how my Ruf VIN Turbo R compares to your conversion. I would also appreciate a heads up on the next gathering.I would also like to talk with Hamaan 7 & pick his brain about M5's. My new 03 M5 with a simple Dinan chip mod doesn't do the job! Please let me know.
To all: Please consider joining me for one of the Nevada open road races! Next event is at Battle Mountain Nevada. NDOT will shut down 85 miles of first class road and we get to run wth full support. A six point harness and simple roll bar is required to run 165 mph. Add more safety equipment and there is no speed limit! There is also a 1k drag just for laughs. Anybody with an interest please e-mail me @ rolandroth@mac.com. Chad? Time for a new gear!

Cheers

TB993TT

Great article! The accolades for this old, low tech car just continue. It is amazing what Porsche and Ruf put together.

bill,
i guess the cts2 is something in between a turbo R and a CTR... Thats what the factory calls it so that's what it is i guess... it really is just a hopped up 993tt with the r package and a little more.

The Ruf is a plush ride with a nice flat torque curve... i like it because it has super drivability all around, but i LOVE my protomotive... simply put, it pulls more frantically to the redline and behaves alot more like a hard driven RS engine with a little more torque.

It will never match the Ruf in terms of pure ability, but the rear wheel drive is a delight to throttle steer and has certainly entertained me alot... i guess the ruf is a little too well behaved for its own good.

simple analogy...

RUF=wife
Protomotive=s@x depraved...leather strapping...foul mouthed S&M... weekend partner(that you wouldn't take home to meet the family)

hope i didn't offend anyone... if i did lighten up, its just an analogy <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />

superyellowfly,

Just curious, why would your Protomotive not match the Ruf in terms of pure ability?

Is your Protomotive a Turbo as well?

Wilber and I have come to the conclusion that the Ruf cars are more balanced in many respects and much more 'drivable,' but the Protomotive (at least his 700hp 996TT version) has the edge in top end power and all out acceleration.

My biggest fear with Wilber's car after driving it at the Streets of Willow is the turbo lag before about 4000rpm, and the exponential increase in power when the boost comes on. It was way too easy to make the car go into a spin. I applied too much throttle going around a corner and the car literally started spinning in circles without warning. The best part is I NEVER LIFTED THE GAS and it still did not recover!!! I was thinking that the AWD, counter steer and physics would help recover the car from the spin.

I think Bill S. would agree that I at least have some knowledge of how to throttle steer, so it's not a lack of fundamentals per se. What I didn't know then is that there is such a plethora of power that it completely overcomes the chassis if you are not prudent with the throttle.

However, Wilber recently had Todd Knighton switch out the Garrett GT's with twin T034's and said the power curve is very smooth, much like the Ruf, except with more power and much less lag. I have not driven the new setup yet, but the old one was downright SCARY!!! So the bondage analogy definitely applies, except the dominatrix is about 7 feet tall, 300 pounds, and can body slam you like a roid rage wrestler from WWE!!!

This is part of what drove me to get a GT3 instead of a Turbo. Yes I know, "normal" 996 Turbos don't behave like this...

Ruf-Racer, please feel free to email me at racingfiend@yahoo.com I would love to help you with tuning your M5. I had the same dilemma and I've done quite a few things to make it a nice touring sedan for the canyons.

Hamann,
The TT conversion done by protomotive was only worth about 400hp... it is infact the bolt on turbo kit. It really does give the car alot of torque and the beauty of it is once those turbos run out of breath, the varioram kicks in and makes the power peaky like Anna kournikova
Anna in leather...mmmm interesting <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
The ruf equates to...hmmm (will keep the rest to myself)
