I have no idea who these guys are, but Steve W, Us, EVO etc all use GIAC. I can tell you that there are no quick fixes other than a 97 ECU as of yet for an upgrade. Then you have it programmed. There are something in the works, but nothing released as yet. Maybe they have a box of 97 ECUs that use or there is a disclaimer you missed.

With an ECU mod only, you wont get more than around 440PS, the turbos are the limiting factor.
There is an issue with programming the '95/'96 chips since new ones are like hen's teeth.

> >> our most popular is the 480.hp upgrade.there are no better programers

This statement, the first part (if they mean a chip only will give 480PS) is a lie and the second part a debateable brag.

I am a new owner looking at the various options of upgrades and have been watching this board for a while. I thought porsche has three defined maps or performance upgrades defined roughly 430 (turbo S) 480, and 520hp. Is this bravado or misinformation or what? I understand we are not just talking about ECU tweeking.

I have seen that Info (that Porsche did a 430/480/520 performance upgrades) as well, I'm not sure where -was it on the Giac site ?
As far as I know, Porsche did only the 430PS and 450PS factory upgrades on the 993tt. They had 480PS and others for the race 993GT2s, maybe that is what is being reffered to ?

It may have been I've been reading many many performance upgrade sites/info. FVD? Do you think the 520 number is realistic without opening the engine? I am told by a tuner that uses the GIAC chip that it is with k24 turbos, S oil cooler, GIAC ECU, and high flow exhaust. All bolt on upgrades.

KRA993tt,

520HP with boltons and a modified ECU is definitely doable. I just went through it (catbypass, new turbos, fuel regulator, Unichip / or substitue a modified ECU) and my number was 507HP after a number of tuning runs so the engine was hot on a hot afternoon in the Bay area. Letting the engine cool down would have easily yielded number above 520.

Go for it...

Bob,

Thanks for the input. Any gotchas or regrets is throttle reponse what you thought it would be? Does suspension handle the extra go? I am just working out the details of getting this done at a shop. Any thoughts of doing it youself? Or did you?

I think you are making a (fairly usual) mistake of getting hung up on peak hp numbers here. Unless you just want bragging rights (nothing wrong with that ) you should be concentrating on the shape of the power/torque curves. Since very few of the US tuners seem to atually bench dyno tune their creations, you need to get to drive a 993tt with an engine spec that you are thinking of buying -this is the only way to cut through the misinformation and assumptions. Remember Bill S (Rennlist memeber) has a Ruf turbo R with only 490PS, but do some searches on here and you will see that his 490PS is more than adequate

KRA993tt,

I actually have the PSS9 setup with larger sway bars (TRG adjustable 25mm / 22mm). While I could have done most of the work myself, the difficulty is in the tuning. I elected to go with a Unichip ECU attachment that allows full tuning of your car. Your car is tuned on the dyno to optimize your fuel, timing and boost requirements of your car and all of its' specific upgrades (turbos, exhaust, intake, larger intercooler, etc). Mine was also tuned to run on 91 octane fuel here in California. I did not have time when I got the original work done, but will be getting a switch installed that will allow me to cutover a completely new engine map for 100+ octane for track use. I am expecting high 500s to close to 600HP that literally will be at the flip of a switch.

As TB993tt stated, it is not all about peak horsepower. With the extra tuning, they were able to achieve a nice HP / Torque curve. Be careful with tuner add statements of 480HP, 520HP when they do not even have your car to tune all of the bits they try to sell you. To get over 500, I required additional injectors to maintain a nice air / fuel ratio throughout the RPM range. These are not part of anyones 'Package' I assume because the factory ECU can not contol them and they are not your standard 'bolt-on' that the tuners like to sell.

Remember, it is not about the 'bolt-ons', but it is about the 'Benjamins' to make it all work together.

viperbob,
tb993tt,

Thanks for the great input. The information you have shared will help me greatly. The tuner I've contacted does use a awd dyno for tuning so hopefully I'm on the right track. Bragging rights are not an issue, its more my concern for going about this the correct way without destroying this fantastic machine. Again thank you I will post my progress.
