Default 993 tt tempurature

Okay, I have very little experience with air cooled cars. I was driving in traffic yesterday going to play hockey (yes my equipment fits in back of car if slide passenger seat forward), tempurature about 65 degrees f, just barely crawling for about 10 minutes, the oil tempurature went up to the upper safe limit (10 oclock). Is this normal? I do have the turbo s auxillary oil cooler. what does this mean in summer? Also, with extra oil cooler does my car require extra oil for oil change?
thanx
Danny

Dan,

The aux oil coolers don't help much when there is no air flow. A nifty mod (which I have yet to do) is to wire a switch so you can manually force your aux fans to high speed... this is supposed to work very well in traffic, and especially when you have a 2nd cooler.

On your second question... typically the oil thermostat is already closed when you do an oil change, so that oil doesn't get changed. Nor the oil in your turbo lines (unless you are really ****). There is so much oil in the system, that a few quarts of old stuff doesn't matter much.

Danny,

Another thought... perhaps your aux fans are not working. This is a fairly common failure mode on 993s... the resistors get corroded and need replacement. Someone smarter than me might be able to tell you how to test them. Perhaps turn the A/C on and listen?

thanx for the quick response ca993tt,
After I park the car and after normal cooldown (idle for 5 min.) I hear the fans turn on and off for about 10 minutes. does this mean my aux fans are working? I assume it does.

You are hearing you rear engine compartment cooling fans. That is normal.

The cooler aux fans (there are two) are located under each headlight way up in front. That's where the coolers & AC condensor is located. I haven't actually tried to listen to them, but it may be possible to hear them if youi switch the A/C on high. Let us know if you hear the fans running up there.

Danny,

At some point (around 8:30, 9:00 on the gauge) the thermostat opens to allow oil to flow to the aux coolers. At some other point, the aux fans should kick on to low, then to high to help cool the oil. 10:00 seems pretty high for moderate ambient temperatures... mine doesn't run that hot.

This is what u need. When i turn it on in traffic, it doesn't go any higher than 8 oclock position, even in summer heat here.... Mine never reached 10pm though, maybe something is not opening up....

HAS YOUR CAR SAT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME? many 911 owners have found a rodent hads built a hotel between their cooling shround and the engine block during storage.... just one possibility...

the bad resistor is a very likely reason too.

Next time pull aside and go listen to the front of the car. You should hear the fan kicking in or going after sometime.

There is a thermostat behind the right headlight that goes bad also and can be changed through the headlight hole.

I drove the car in very cool temperatures today and not in traffic and it ran cool, just above the lower normal range (about 8 oclock on the gauge). I turned on the ac at a gas station and heard the one fan in the front turn on and operate. this must be the ac fan so I must check if it runs hot agian the other fan for the aux oil cooler. will post updates
thanx for all the input
Danny
