Default New Windshield

Finally replaced my windshield after over 11 years. It was really etched, but I knew that as soon as I replaced it I'd get a crack as big as Anna Nicole Smith. Last trip to the track the first Viper spun off covering the track with gravel and the second one threw it up and finally broke the old thing. The guy riding with me couldn't believe I was happy about it! The installer was pretty experienced and said that the reason they squeak and creak is because they aren't installed right in the center of the opening and the edges touch the metal. I had previously bought some urethane packing to put in around the edges. It is a 996 part # and someone recommended it for 993 windshields to avoid the noise. Turns out there really isn't any place to put it. Final tip, the rubber molding doesn't come with the windshield and rarely can you reuse the old one.

My original one lasted 9 years but after too many high speed Euro blasts it was so peppered that when the sun shone at a certain angle you could barely see through it
I always wondered what the creaking noise everybody went on about was since my original one was quiet as a mouse.
Cue new screen and squeaking and creaking like a pro
I have the 996 cord part jammed in there and some pedro's does the trick - and there's nothing like replacing a 9+ year old screen to make the car feel new again is there ?

Another trick for making the old 993s look new again... new headlight lenses. The first time I saw Don's old sled (911/Q45), I was blown away by how fresh it looked. He had just put in the new headlight lenses. Rufus has a nice, new, and creaky windshield... I must find this Pedro's stuff you guys keep talking about.

That would be 996 541 903 00 - Round Rubber Cord.
It has some instruction on how to solve it, so check technical bulletin 6420 - 6, for more information.

Don - congrats on the new windshield, it does make it feel like a new car. I replaced 2 of them on my C4S within a week.

Don,
I've doubled the track life of my windshilds by installing clear uv tint on the outside of the windshield. When its pited, just pull it off. Caution, this may be illeagal in some states, but thats not why I get stopped.

There was no aftermarket option, $900 for the real deal installed. I got a fixit ticket for clear plastic covers on my license plates, so I'd better stay on the straight and narrow Jim.

I have been in the same boat as you, Scott- three windshields in one year and two within a month. I am going to lower the deductable on my insurance to $100 so that it covers windshield replacement. I have shelled out over $2200 in windshields in the last 12 months! This is more than all the maintenance expenses, minus tires, combined over six years.
