who says a 993tt doesn't have its practical side?
I recently needed to move a 14 ft extension ladder a few miles (650) across Europe (as you do). I had the choice of a sedan or the 993tt. I chose the 993tt. Why? Because it was the outrageous and ridiculous choice. Plus the drive getting there would be a lot more fun and the return trip would be interesting as well.
Using a Thule roof rack with 2 ratchet straps and load stops along with ratchet straps fixing the ends of the ladder to the towing eyes the ladder was very stable at a cruising speed of 90-95 mph with the odd excursion above 100. It got more than a few strange looks and a few pictures taken but it was very successful and I have no regrets.
The 360 driver on the train ahead of me was jealous that his recycled olive oil can wasn't up to the same task...

With the increased drag (relative to fuel cost) you probably would have been better off buying a new ladder at your destination. Glad you made it with no damage to the roof, I personally would not risk it.

Sounds like lots of white-knuckle fun. I had to carry a 24inch diameter white polystyrene mooring buoy home in my passenger seat over the weekend. That raised some eyebrows and it for those on this side of the pond, it looked like I was chaffeuring around Jack from the Jack-in-the-Box restaurant commercials!

It was all quite uneventful and stable even at speed. Porsche rates the roof load at 75 kg and the 4 straps have a load rating of 800 lbs each so I didn't feel much could go wrong. I stopped after 50km to check everything was still tight and found that nothing had shifted or loosened. I used quite a bit of tape to prevent flutter or rattles and had no problems. Fuel economy looked to have dropped perhaps 1.5-2 mpg but it was hard to tell as I can't normally cruise at those speeds in the UK for very long. Not sure the bucket would have stayed in place!

Fantastic. I once had to pick up two sheets of 4X8 plywood and drive it from HD to the house. It worked fine on the roof rack. Who says you cant use your 993TT for an everyday car. A woman coming out of the Home Depot looked at me weird when I was loading it on the rack but I can bet I had more fun on the drive home than she did in her mini van. OK...I was nervous but I still loved it!
