Default Turbo question

What is the difference between the k24 vs the k24/26 turbo? What turbos are the higher HP 993's running? Thanks

Scott,
Iwill give you an amateurish answer, the differences are in the housing, compressor wheel and turbine sizes. Th elarger the compressor, the more it will flow, the K26 has a larger compressor wheel, so it moves more air. The size of the turbine will also dictate the amount of backpressure that your system will have, smaller, means more backpressure but will spin faster.

Your 3.8 displacement should have something along the lines of a K26 or some sort of hybrid, the stock K24 will be small and not flow more than about 500HP by any means.

There are Garrett turbos out there as well for high output engines, but the modifications to the exhaust system will be expensive, unless you use a Garrett wheel in a KKK housing.

Thanks Jean,

Yes I do have k26's. Are you saying that most 3.8's such as Andial are running k26's? What turbo's do you run?

Brad,
Andial runs smaller turbos for some reason (I guess better response, less lag but obviously less top end) I hear they are GT1 turbos but there are different versions out there for the same nomenclature. The GT1 I know of are K16/24 ybrids which are way too small.

I run Garrett turbos of an older generation but that are quite bigger than K26 and I love their response, especially for my track usage at higher RPMs. A 3.8 engine with K24s (stock) will underperform, they are too small for that application. Kevin can elaborate more, and he builds several combinations including using the latest 997 compressor wheels.

K24 and K26s can be modified as well of course, I know TB993TT's engine builder does some amazing work with the KKK turbos, they work very closely with Borg-Wagner and have access to the latest racing products.
