Ferrari Owner thinking of switching to 993tt
#16
Sounds like a welcome relief from high service bills. My Ferrari requires a belt change every 5yrs. This involves dropping the motor at a average cost of 5-8K. I just had my second one done to the tune of over $7,000. I still think they are beautiful but sometimes beautiful things can be delicate and not meant to be handled much.

Well - I hope you get a 993tt. When I was looking for mine I also looked at the 328QV - I chose the tt because of several reasons - lower repair bills, better performance and it will fit a child seat in the back (I had the only turbo in NYC with a baby seat and baby on board sign). I find that it is lots of fun, faster than the 996tt, more reliable than the ferrari (so I'm told), and the longer I own it, the more obsessed I become with it.

Ecco
Another thing to note is that there are two shades of Silver on the 993. Polar has a silver hue to it, Arctic is a true silver. I, personally, prefer Arctic, just thought this might help you narrow your search a bit.

I would amplify Robroy72's descriptions a bit: Polar has a "blue" hint, Arctic has a "brown" hint. I prefer the Polar.
I would also not be so quick to say that the 993TT is faster than a 996TT... roughly same weight, and the 996TT has 20HP edge, and perhaps a bit better aero shape (not sure). Peter is obviously crazy about his 993TT... as am I.

When I was shopping for my car, I drove a couple almost stock cars. Then ol' Sunday Driver told me "I'll make you forget about a stock car"........ Frankencar came into my life after THAT test drive. 25k miles down the road, no problems that I did not bring on myself (viscous coupler) and very reasonable actual maintenace costs. Upgrades, on the other hand, seem to absorb a fair amount of "discretionary income." ( I have to be discrete how much I reveal to momma about these expenses.)

Beautiful 348.
I think that the best thing about the 993TT is that it is one of the few cars that has supercar performance and can still be driven daily. If you like to drive your cars and not just polish and stare at them the 993TT is an excellent choice.

Ecco, I had a 355 and loved the car but the modern porsche is much more car in every way except sound. Go for it. To me the ideal combination is a 360 or 430 and a modded pcar turbo.
You might check some of the sites for either higher miles 360 or euro 360 as there are some pretty reasonable deals out there, and the modern Ferraris are very reliable, sound awesome and just have the look and feel that is hard to duplicate. Either way, the 993 is a great car and I hope you enjoy the change.

BTW If anyone on this board knows of someone in the market for a really nice 348ts (possibly the nicest in the country) Here is a link to my ad on Ferrari chat:

Looking forward to joining the 993tt brotherhood soon!

Ok I drove a local 993tt and I must say WOW. The performance and acceleration far exceeded even the Viper ACR that I used to own. My question is this, being that a 2001 turbo can now be bought for in the low 60's. with decent mileage. Which car IYO is the better deal? I know the 993tts' are much more desirable to collectors ( and I think they may even look a little better) but I am looking to get the newest car that I can and get the most performance out of my 911 turbo dollars.

01 turbos are a terrific deal, and they are very, very satisfying cars. They can also be modifiied to produce more HP than their air-cooled older brothers. They have larger cockpits and more modern amenities, as well as a better chassis and suspension.
On the other hand.... you knew this was coming, right? The 993TT was produced in far smaller volumes (and at far greater cost) than the 996TT... they will always be more collectible. The purists among us feel that "Porsche = air-cooled", and the newer cars just don't reflect the history of Porsche. The 993TTs have all the performance that anyone can reasonably ask for, they are bulletproof, and they flat out look better. And I for one, prefer the more intimate cockpit. I have absolutely no interest in any of the newer Porsche models.
If you ask a 993 guy which he prefers... this is what you will hear. If you ask a 996 guy... well, you get a slightly different story. But don't trust those guys... they are just leasing theirs!
