Smile 993 Turbo S - things to look for

Hi Guys,

As the resident Porsche "expert" in my circle of friends I have been asked what the common problems with 993 Turbo Ss are. I gather one would be looking for all the usual things like full service history etc, but my technical knowledge generally ends at the 964s - still need to pick up Adrian's 993 book!

Could someone please list them, or send me in the direction of a thread where this has been discussed previously? I'm sure it has been discussed previously, but a quick search did not return any results.

This is the car in question:

Thanks in advance.

A few more questions:

What is the average life of the engine when properly maintained and driven moderately hard? I gather the top end (valve guides etc) give way before the bottom end as in most other later model air cooled 911s?

I have a US spec Twin Turbo S, and I would assume that all the normal items that are maintenance on 97 Twins apply,

Hydraulic Accumulators go bad quite often, 25-400 fix, turbos can go bad from improper use and not cooling them down properly, clutches are hydrualic and can cause a mess if they break down...

I have only experienced normal maintenance and the accumulator, but I only have 12k miles on the car. These cars are basically bulletrproof(per se) if taken car off, plenty of examples out there in normal form that hit the track and are daily drivers too, great cars.

And no matter how much maintenance there is , at least it is a hell of alot cheaper than maintaining a Ferrari or Lambo..

Ok, I am sure a litany of posters will start with the little in's and out's so have fun.

Langers,

Cant give you a list or a link however - I know that car. Awesome car and has a reasnable history and always well maintained.... I havent asked why he is selling - but still should have Extended warranty IIRC. Can be renewed every year till it is 10 years old - so easy enough to cover most things except consumables. Not many in AU and a CHEAP price.

Good Luck,

Simon

Trickiest parts of the car to maintain probably aren't mechanical. Wheels are impossible to refinish and all the leather in the interior (EVERYTHING is leather) needs regular moisturizing. Probably no more difficult to maintain mechanically than a regular TT. Most problems with mine are from lack of use - 12k miles in 9 years. But what a blast those 12k miles.

Steven_H,

I have a good friend who thinks there is a paintable solution to refinishing the wheels, instead of powder coating, and exact match. I will keep you posted. I have 12k miles on my car too....

The usual source:
http://www.993tt.com/

It has the most common flaws and errors on 993TT.
You should find the same ones on a 993TTs

Thunder,

The factory figures for the AU version of the 993tt was 408HP and the "S" was 424HP IIRC. My books are at work - I will try and confrim tomorrow. Research done tells me that the US version has 450HP but I cant confrim this as yet. Anyone else?

Sorry Simon,
The U.S version has the same engine package as the RoW 430 version.
It's still K16 Turbos with a more aggresive mapping

Rassel & Thunder,

My first quote was correct for the AU version. The second bit of info - I cannot confirm (I only have AU literature) - but Rassel would know - so I say it is the same the world over. I dont know what I was thinking - it was late - I was busy on resarching new bicycles - maybe I was thinking of the GT2?? Thanks Rassel!

Best

Simon so you're getting a bicycle instead of the TT now?
