M64/60RS Engine

I have recently purchased a 993 TT with 450 HP engine. The car was built in 1996 and the new engine was built and fitted in 1998.
The original 993 TT engine is named M64/60 (408 HP); the original 993 Turbo S engine is named M64/60S (450 HP); the original 993 GT2 engine is named M64/60R (430 HP).
The engine in my car is M64/60RS, with 450 HP and typical Turbo S double pipes exhausts.
What kind of engine is this? It seems fantastic. Max speed has been recorded as 304 KM/H, and 0-100 KM/H acceleration is 4.0 seconds.
Any info about this Turbo "RS" engine?

Regards,

Stefano

Stefano

Pure speculation but it could be the generation 2 993GT2 engine with 450HP? It might be covered in Adrian Streather's book, I am sure someone will find out.

It sounds like you have an amazing car, post some pics!

Edit: the 1998 GT2 EVO of 450HP had the same M64/60R engine, there is no mention anywhere of the 64.60RS engine...

Jean,

It is what I know. Three kind of engines are known: M64/60, M64/60R, and M64/60S. I have never heard of a M64/60RS engine.
My car was made as a 993 TT in 1996 with a M64/60 engine of 408 hp, I presume.
In 1998 a "major" upgrade was done: this was a completely new engine fitted in the car. The old one was not elaborated, it was changed. What kind of engine is this? I thought it was the original M64/60S of the new Turbo S, but it is punched RS in the engine. In the specification paper it is registered as M64/60RS with 331 Kw. This means that at least one M64/60RS engine was built. Which are the real specs of this engine are not known.
A few archived photos are attached.

Stefano que bella macchina!!

Gorgeous car.
concering the engine, this must be a "very" rare version.. The M64/60R engine was for the street 993GT2 with 430-450HP) The M64/60S typically "should" relate to a 3.8 Ltr engine, although Adrian S. book relates to it as a 3.6 Ltr.

The only thing I can think of, is that this very special engine is an ex-GT2 engine that has been modified with 3.8 Ltr Piston and cylinders..Which IMO must have an output of > 450HP.

Keep us posted of what you find out.

Edit: BTW I think that the turbo "S" engine is a M64/60 as well and does not have the "S" denomination.

Jean:

At least in Europe, the 993 Turbo S engine is the M64/60S. This is for sure in the 160 cars buillt for the European market. I do not know if the 993 Turbo S cars for the US (182-184 units) have the M64/60 or the M64/60S engine.
BTW, in Europe (Germany and Italy, for example) the US version is often not considered a "real" Turbo S, but an overpowered "normal" 933 TT with Turbo S look. Could this be due to the fact that the US engine was NOT un underpowered M64/60S (424 hp instead of 450 hp), but an overpowered M64/60?
I really don't know the answer. If I find any additional info I will let you know.

Ciao

That is one gorgeous car!

I have no clue about the M64 RS but during my search for a 996gt2 I have seen an italian "540 factory hp" 996gt2!
I have a copy of the purchase invoice where it says "preparazione sportiva" for 16,784 Euros ex VAT.
A sheet called "dati tecnici per vettura 996gt2" says 542hp and 755nm what is exactly the power of the RS-Tuning kit.

Perhaps Porsche builds some special engines for u guys every now and then...

stefano,
Your TT is beautiful. Congrats.
May i ask, why does it have TT-S rear fenders when it was a 96TT? Do you have the invoice or option codes? Just curious as to what else is special about it.
Perhaps you can contact Porsche in Germany and maybe they have some record of what they did to it... in case customer service in Europe is better than that on Porsche north america.
regardless, enjoy your TT

I want your car!!!!!!!

Corte Loco 06-05-2006 12:35 AM

The cars in Europe are registered on the year of manufacture. That means if the car was built in november 1996, it's a 96 model. You can check yours and maybe the date of manufacture is sept-december and is a 1997 model for US only.

Ciao

Stefano,
I am getting my data from "The Essential Companion".. it does mention somewhere the M64/60"S" designation for the Turbo S and then in another place it does not. I might be reading the wrong info.
The only difference between both engines if I am not mistaken are the turbos and mapping, the base engine is the same, whereas the GT2 "R" engine has other modifications.

Stummel does bring an interesting twist to this.. could it be breathed upon by RS Tuning, which explains how fast it is?
Jean

TB993tt 06-05-2006 05:55 AM

Stummel - It would be very likely that the 996GT2 had the RS Tuning 542 kit as this kit was TUV approved and fitted by some Porsche dealers, not sure what this would do to your warranty 'tho ?

Jean
RS don't usually add anything to the end of the engine number, they give each build its own number but don't stamp/print it anywhere on the car other than in the ECU.

Stummel 06-05-2006 07:13 AM

TB,
That is exactly what I thought when I first read the numbers.
The (very reputable) dealer says the 540PS have been "prepared by Porsche factory".
Do you think that perhaps Weissach would use a RS-Tuning kit?

Stefano, Sorry for being OT.

As for the engine number, Stefano did not say that RS is stamped on the engine. He said "In the specification paper it is registered as M64/60RS..."
Perhaps just a typo?

Stefano, Is the 306kph and 4.0 sec 0-100 also from the specification paper or do you have any other sources for that?

You should come over to Germany and it will be my pleasure to test the 306kph :-)

Didn't we have a similar discussion about this car a couple of months back on the 993 board...? As I recall, it was a shameless attempt to sell the (adulterated) car. If I am incorrect, please accept my apologies.

Sbrillanti 06-05-2006 01:31 PM

Tom:

Thank you for your message. I would be pleased if you could find the exact reference of the previous discussion in the 993 forum. Certainly, I was not involved in that discussion.
About my presumed adulterated car, it is true that I can be interested in selling it in order to purchase a 993 Turbo S, European model, with 450 HP.
But, I will not sell my car for any reason if I really find that it is a sort of "special" car. I can post the specification paper indicating the M64/60RS engine.
The M64/60RS engine does exist, at least in my car, and this is not a typo since it is clearly stated in papers that the engine is Turbo and RS.
What kind of engine is this? A trivial adulterated turbo engine, as you can easily find elsewhere, or something similar to the 1997 Porsche 911 RS Turbo car engine? This is the point. If you can add some technical info, you would be welcome!

Stefano

Here is the thread https://rennlist.com/forums/993-forum/234998-993-turbo-special-edition-please-help.html

And you are also Italian?

Well spotted Tom.
