I want a 993 TT but have never owned one. I have had most every other model- 993's, 996 TT, 997S but not this one. In my research, many speak of the the quirks of the 993 turbo... what am I missing. It's beautiful and fast. What do you know that I don't...?

The only quirk I can think of is the 993TT-owner's secret handshake. Oh wait. Crap. I'm not supposed to reveal that to outsiders. Just kidding.
Major quirks:
o fast as hell
o smooth as silk
o easy on the eyes
o same basic maintenance as normal 993s

"Ricers" will challenge you,
cannot drop the clutch (like the good ole days in the NOVA SS),
Take care of those Turbos sitting in the sauna back there',
Enjoy often,

Only quirk I've found is the clutch really has no feel. I do appreciate the assistance though when I have to drive it in heavy traffic, the trade-off is worth it IMO.

1.Weak valve guides-Possibly requiring a valve job in about 35k-50k miles
2.Secondary air injectors clog easily throwing a check engine light (SAI check valve should be replaced every 15k miles.
3.Poor quality OEM shocks
4.weak main shaft in the 96's

You forgot - the dual mass flywheel/clutch is not goo for more than 30k miles, and if your alternator belt starts falling off and/or the fan belt idler bearing goes - you may want to upgrade to the RS single belt setup.

Ulp. I'm waaaayyyyy overdue.
1. 70k on 1st 993TT... no sign of any issues. 86K on second 993TT when Ruf rebuilt the thing from top to bottom.
2. yes, you're spot on on this one. If they haven't been changed by now, they need to be changed.
3. With all that torque and AWD, something has to give if you're ever dumb enough to do drag-race, side-step the clutch launches. The 1997 shaft is only a small bit stronger... still can't tolerate that kind of abuse.
"the dual mass flywheel/clutch is not good for more than 30k miles": tell that to the guy in San Francisco with almost 200k miles on his original clutch and flywheel. Clutch wear is a function of the skill of the driver (with some consideration for highway or stop and go use). Waldo has 70k on his original clutch and is STILL going strong. Rufus got a new clutch at the Ruf rebuild at 86k miles.
You guys didn't mention the turbo rebuild generally required at about 75k miles... depending upon how well you cool your turbos down. Is that quirky enough for you?

Quirky... I'll give you quirky...
You've already seen most of the stuff that will need doing posted above... well, my car needed it ALL in the first month as most here already know!
But here's the quirky side of the 993TT... I DON'T GIVE A **** .... the car is just so bloody good it's all worth it! I want to drive it every time I see it. When I stop at a cafe somewhere for coffee I park so I can stare at it. When I wash it the experience is almost sexual. It's just such a forgiving, awesome, mindblowingly fast, practicle, every day, sexy, sure footed machine.
Nothing before it comes close (I know, I have owned a 944, a 964 C4, and a 964T). Nothing after it has the same driver input (I've driven the boxter, the 996 and the 997).
This will go down in history as the very best 911 Turbo Porsche ever built. Period.
Oh, and if I sound biased it's cos I am!

I'm a new 993tt owner, and in the first month of ownership I'm preparing to spend more than a few thousand dollars in maintenance, repairs, and upgrades. My car has 70k miles on it so it seems to be approaching an age where some work needs to be done. Am I bothered? Not hardly. As far as I'm concerned, Porsche hasn't succeeded in making a car that has combination of looks, performance, and character that the 993tt has. The 996 and 997 series are good cars, but they're just missing something.
As several others have mentioned, I can't stop looking at my car. I'll go out into the garage just to take a peek, and then realize I have a stupid grin on my face. It's that good.
Here are some shots of mine...
