Tim,
Depends on what mileage you intend on doing. Some of these guys are doing big miles (and enjoying every single one I bet) and consequently have fairly large bills. I do about 3k miles a year - 1 service costs me £500 ($900) and a set of rears every couple of years (£350/$630) so actual running costs are pretty low for me. Saying that my steering rack needed replacing ($2000) which is not uncommon, and lower suspension bushes ($500) but these are once off (hopefully!).
Next year I intend on tracking it so I expect bills (and smiles) will rise.
Let's face it, compared to an equivalent Italian supercar it's peanuts.

Doogle -

Think of this - compare the amount of down time the 993tt has compared to the "equivalent" (though we all know there is no equivalent) Italian super car wannabe. Our up time is far more than theirs - this of course doesn't include the time some of us take the cars off the road to make them super-er.

Ok:I'm clear why jmcd33 has paid $20,000 in the last year a 70,000 mile car which he has put 25-30,000 miles!

I'm still confused, as I am going to be one of those 3 or 4 thousand mile people. Some have said $5000.00 some have said nearly nothing except oil and tires which are wear items.

Low mileage guys what is your average annual cost?

Don't be scared....spend some $$ for a good PPI.....you'll be fine.......Me 17,000 miles in last 2 years bought with 21,000 miles/ now 38,000....if you don't count the PSS9's, Evo Uprights/GT2 Tie Rods, Gert's FTB, Euro Horn, Repowder coat wheels etc. I'm at 3 oil changes and 8 tires in 24 months...we'll call it under $3,500.00 in non-optional maintenance..

Peter S,
I think we're pushing the same point. My point was that our cars cost peanuts to run for the same road time as an 'equivalent' Supercar. Put simply - I couldn't afford to own an 'equivalent' Ferrari/Lambo etc. and drive it like I drive my tt!!

Tim,
I do 3000 miles a year and I budget for a service every year, and a set of tyres every 1.5 - 2 years. Of course the 'unforseen' costs you can't budget for, but that's where a good PPI comes in.

I've been told that if the 'unforseen' requires opening the block like for bearings or rods the minimum price would be $15K.

What I mean is, you can't let unforseen costs put you off a potential purchase. Otherwise none of us would have them, right? It's always a bit of a gamble buying a second hand car, especially one with an original sticker price of £100,000....but as 2nd hand supercars go these are amongst the safer bets.
The best you can do is limit your exposure to potential problems as best you can.

That is what an aftermarket insurance policy is for! $2,000 or so and your covered for 3 years worth of "unforseen" repairs...great peace of mind

I've put over 3K miles in 5 months and so far its just cost me an oil change...abit over $200. This car has been very solid...im very happy I purchased it.

Just exactly where can one get an aftermarket policy for a '96-'97 993tt? I couldn't find one...

i inheirited an aftermarket warranty from the PO. It was supposed to be a comprehensive policy covering just about everything. I'd say I got a check for about a third of what i should have. Coordinating the adjuster with your tech is a nightmare. They wouldn't take my mechanics word regarding repairs and made crazy demands like "just take off the heads and leave them off until we get around to seeing the car" The adjuster tried to find every technicality to refuse paying for the repairs. I guess I'm happy that I didnt shell out my cash for such an aggravating and ineffective warranty. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has experienced a warranty company that they loved

Official Porsche warranties are available on cars up to 10 years old in the UK. From memory 1 year was £900 ($1600) and 2 yrs £1500 ($2700).

Millennium 1-888-547-1522

Some things are excluded from coverage, I know some engine mods are. Outside of PCNA few will even touch a tt for warranty. I've never had to use these folks in a claim and I suggest you have them send you a sample service contract. Mines a Platinum Plan @ 4yrs or 48k miles. Wasn't cheap at $5100

Hi Tim

I'm going to have a stab, but I am by far the least experienced here as I jumped from a 91 964 Turbo to a 993 TT just about 2 months ago... BUT.... as most on this forum will tell you, after a week my car went in for an engine rebuild!

Here's my .2c for what it's worth, hope it helps:

My 91 Turbo easily cost me $3000 - $4000 a year, but I was doing track work at least once a quarter. I went through a set of tyres at least once a year, and 2 clutches in my 4 years of ownership. Apart from that, however, the car was stunning, and bullet proof. I bought the car with 66000 km on it (about 40000 miles). After I bought it I needed to replace a few parts as they were worn.. like boost hoses, air-con clutch, clutch and a few other things... After that the car was solid until I sold it at 120000 kms. (75000 miles).

My 993TT had 95000 km (60000 miles) on the dial when I bought it. Right after I bought it, it needed a top end rebuild due to worn valve guides. I am told that once I do this work the engine will, like the 964T, be solid for another 60000 miles, bar the usual services... I am told that the service and labor costs on a 993TT are lower in general than the older cars as it is a newer engine (but have no experience of that yet).

By the way, I have also now heard of NON-turbo 993's developing similar valve issues after they reach higher miles... so it is not a turbo thing.

I have also heard that lower milage cars, ones that sit more than get driven, develop their own issues anyway... but again, I am not an expert.

Here's the moral of my story...

I would encourage you to find a well looked after, well driven, medium milage car that has had all the bugs ironed out. I would preferably look for one that has recently had a top end, or major work (like in the last 10000 kms) and that will give you at least 100000 kms of great driving.

Low miles does not necessarily mean perfect car... find one with a good history, and where the owner was an enthusiast.

Not sure if that helps... good luck!!

Mine is from Auto Protection, Inc. underwritten by Warranty America, LLC....
Also has free roadside assistance, rental car benefits, towing allowance and hotel and restaurant accommodations...seems to be a very extensive list of covered repair items on this policy...I have not had to use it yet..
