Steve,

Who is doing the paint on your calipers?

Seioursly, will the stoptech be an advantage for agressive street and mile track driving. Is $2,500 a good investment? Logically I always think bigger is better but I also know that bigger in this case is heavier and the Big Red are no slouch to begin with... please help. I have 19"s shoes coming next month.

Tony,

Contact Chris Walrod to see if he can help you with the paint. I already committed to my body shop, or I'd be talking to Chris.

So, seriously, big reds are plenty of braking power for all the street driving and most track driving you and I will ever in our lifetimes actually do. For us, this is simply a cosmetic upgrade. Sorry I can't help you with the "safety" angle. Try as I might. I'm also a world-class rationalizer.

The 14" StopTechs weigh the same as the factory brakes because they use an alloy hat rather than the factory iron. Getting full floating and thicker rotors in the rear for an additional $1500 made it a no brainer for me. My rationalization was "More go, gotta get more whoa".

Don,

Don't do that. Stop it. Tony, Don is a pretty serious track guru and he can probably actually use the bigger brakes. Don't let him get to you. But... as long as we are all talking in hypothetical terms here... Don, can you use the big red fronts on the rear and save a bit of $$? Do you have to do anything to the master cylinder to rebalance the brakes or anything like that? Not for me, of course... a friend of mine wants to know.

I agree with you Steve that the Big Red is probably more than what I need. But if the master cylinder or anything else that will jack up the cost, I might just go for it for the cosmetics and as Don has put it... for the "more whoa for my more go" (soon to be home).

Steve,

I was going to tell you to go see Chris as well. I've got a tentative plan to meet with Chris as soon as I get my car back... I was thinking about yellow but I think I'm going to stay with Red.

The front brakes are completely different from the rear, not swapable. No master cylinder or proportioning valve changes were required, at least when you swap all 4 corners. Yellow is available for the calipers and when you do all 4 the front and rear pads are the same size, so you can rotate them to equalize wear.

Thanks Don
I am 90% satisfied with the braking performance of the stock brakes so far, I am looking at reducing somewhat the unsprung weight without having to go for the zillion dollar ones. I saw the StopTechs on a prepped Skyline GTR last week-end and was very impressed by them.
I will check out the website.

Steve and Tony. Just to throw gasoline on the fire, you can get $1K for your old big reds-I had 3 or 4 guys that wanted mine and were disappointed they were already sold. So.......$4K less $800 for the painted calipers, less $1K for the old brakes, less $2K because the old rotors, pads and lines need replacing anyway, voila...big brakes for $200!

Tony,

Don't fall for the crazy "911/Q45 math" proposed by Don. He's been able to justify a 3.8l conversion, for goodness sakes. According to 911/Q45 math, they actually paid HIM to do the conversion. An absolute master at rationalization; I hand over the cup to Don.

I just checked my rotors, and my, my, my, there IS an actual lip forming on the edge. Now... can we get fast talker Don to do the installation?

Sure, come on up. I've got a 10 lb sledgehammer and a plumbing wrench.
