Default K&N and BMC air filters

Just installed a K&N filter on my TT. The tube of grease used along the edge of the filter box base was a pain in the butt but was finally accomplished. Has anyone here installed without using the tube of grease?

Also, came across BMC filters. Do they require they same install to be done with the tube of grease?

Lastly, which one is considered better? There's alot of marketing going on (ie: hp increase; used by F1) on their websites.

some of the oiled filters can cause problems with the MAF. i pulled the k&n out of my car and went back to an oem filter. no degredation in performance at all and no worries about contaminating the MAF.

I have bmc and it required to Buzz off the "nub" around the perimeter of the airbox
because it was too thick to close, once this was done I have had no problems.
best filter (bought from Viper BOb) in my opinion.

agreed...bmc no problems and extra airflow gives a little more sound and depth....
