Default 993 Turbo or GT3

Gentleman...I could use your advice. Have a stock '97 993TT and am considering selling it and getting a GT3 to track. But, I haven't decided yet b/c I think, if I've going to make that investment with all the upgrades serious tracking would involve, it better be something I'm really going to do...especially since whatever Posche I own will be my daily driver...at 6'3'' and more weight that I'd like to admit the GT3 w/ the racing seats will be pretty uncomfortable...and, I don't want to regret giving up the best road car Porsche ever made!

Here's my plan instead...go to a few DE and Autocross events in my area (Cambridge, MA) to make sure serious tracking is something I really want to do.

What do you think? Thank you!!!

get the GT3...no brainer there. A little more of a challenge to drive fast w/o the FWD. But such a fantastic car.

Then buy a used cheap Jetta or Golf for your daily commute...hell get a used Tarus for all that matters. Park it on any street and fargetabouit!

Why dont you take the TT to a few events and see if its your thing? If it is, then you may want to consider a dedicated track car (either a p-car or something like a Radical).

There's a track prepped GT3 for sale in Autoweek for $89k. It has a cage and a few other nice add-ons. Very low mileage, if I recall correctly. As for the choice... both great cars, you just can't make a bad decision. The TT is certainly easier to drive on the street, the GT3 easier on the track. I guess you really need them both.

I am afraid I do not share the views of LA964RS. In my opinion the GT3 is less of a challenge to drive than a MODDED 993TT. You have to be much more subtle with the throttle on a 993TT especially if it is modded.

Also, the same driver in a GT3 or a modded 993TT (500hp, suspension and some weight loss) can have better times with the TT if his driving skills are reasonably advanced. These mods are quite typical for the TT crowd, especially if they see track events, so you are not comparing to something very unreasonable. The TT threshold is much higher than the GT3 as far as performance mods is concerned.

Looks is something very personal. Value, the TT.
A GT3 RS would be worth considering for sure, more lively and will hold its value better.
The GT3 is a beautiful car though. For Autocross I would guess the GT3 is a better car due to the better throttle response, cable shifter, and lag free torque.

I did my first low speed autocross yesterday (mostly second gear) in my modded 993tt. It was
very challenging, fun, and rewarding. I concur with Jean, this car will take a long time to master
and is extremely rewarding (and the 4-wheel drifts are priceless fun!). I improved each run and
was still beat by all manner of cars; Suby STI's, Miata's, 914's, z06's, etc. Note: I also beat
alot of people and surprised myself.
good luck in your decision--I say 993tt

Talk to OldGuy since he's had the pleasure of owning both cars.

I would echo Jean's comments. I just returned from Mid-Ohio and had the opportunity to be on the track with a GT3. My car has bolt on mods, no engine internals. I was able to run with this car quite well. I also spoke to a guy who had traded his 993TT for a GT3. He had only tracked the GT3 for 6 months but said it had no where near the amount of grip that his 993TT had. Two different cars. I would definitely find out how you like tracking a car before discarding the 993TT.

You better be a very committed racer to use a race prepped GT3 as a daily driver or own several kidney belts. I'd get a few driver ed events under my belt before I make that leap. BTW, I love running down GT3's with my overweight 993tt. Best of all I like to fill their rear view mirror with my ill handling 993tt in the corners.

Gentlemen...thank you for the advice...I'm going to take the 993TT to a couple of DE events before I make the commitment. And, I will be shooting "Old Guy" a note! In the meantime, I'll be putting on some new P-Zero Assim N1 or 2s if I can find them or SO2-As per Viken's advice. Thank you so much for all your help!

It is I, glad you took it was intended, tongue in cheek. I really like the Gt3, but no one will let me drive their's on the track. humm wonder why. Leaving sport seat in pass. side as I need to clean my rear window, which I can't do with a fixed back. I'll do the next TracQuest if its not in Aug. or Sept. Hope to see you there.

Holzmantm....

What most GT3 guys will tell you is "if you have to ask, stick with a turbo". And we wouldn't want you to be uncomfortable in those nasty racing seats on the way to Starbucks. Quite a conundrum though because unlike your 993tt, the GT3 does have a cup holder for your Triple Soy Skinny Latte......
