Smile Turbo R&R UPDATE/GOT IT!!

Does anyone have instructions for removing/replacing the turbos on our cars? When I searched, I keep getting referenced to HERE, but the link to the yahoo site folder is empty. Just planning on future mods...Thanks!!

Marc

.....yep. After inspections...look as if the left one is leaking a bit, likely from a failed compressor seal, according to Kevin. I have a few weeks before full blown driving season so I thought I would nip it in the bud now. Right now......soaking all the bolts/nuts for weekend removal. ANY tips on removing would be appreciated!

Off to Sears for some longer extensions and long handled metric hex wrenches..... Marc

I'll try and summarize what the shop manual says, sorry no fax for the pictures.
Remove rear bumper and mufflers
Unbolt A/C compressor, but leave hoses connected
Remove intercooler hoses and plug holes in turbo. Loosen two bolts in panel near upper turbo opening
Unplug O2 sensor harness from near A/C hoses
Remove cat heat shields, turbo heat shields and loosen turbo mounting bolts
Remove muffler brackets, oil lines and turbo inlet hoses
Cut off the waste gate vacuum hoses, do not attempt to pry off
Remove turbo

Do a search to find the recommended parts to replace when reassembling, I've seen it here.

Ok.....thanks for those who helped. I soaked bolts, removed all bolts on heat exchanger, turbo, oil lines, mounting bracket, said mother-fu*#er real loud, and it dropped out on my forhead.

Now, the inlet tubes looked pretty much oil free, as did the compressor wheel. But 1/4 cup of nasty oil came out the outlet tube to the intercooler (can see residual on the second picture)...I guess this is not good. Waiting for Dr. Kevin to give it to me straight.

Crab to Paul.

Don No wonder labor rates are so high!!! all you have to do is put the rear on jacks.Remove wheels. loosen the header bolts. loosen the four Cat to Turbo bolts and remove. loosen the 3 bolts from the header to turbo and remove. loosen the hose clamps on the compressor side of the turbo, the black hoses in from the intercooler and out to the intake. Loosen the oil lines to the turbo and remove the clamps on them. Remove the oil lines now and allow to drain. Oneclamp is ON the turbo and other clamp is on the rear of the engine case. Remove the turbo oiler line and the one turbo hanger bolt. and the turbo will come out.

Not once did we pull off the rear bumper or the headlites!!!

For intallation reverse the process BUT buy all new bolts and crush rings for the header and the two on the turbo, one to the cat and one to the header.

Paul,
If you'd removed the headlights, he probably wouldn't have had to do this again!

Don youre right -dog gone it. I had both front fenders off -the strut bar- both headlights And the cab top.
But I was changing the valve cover gasket. It was pretty easy though to get the front sway bar back on with all the front suspension removed! Marc did say the valve cover gasket was NOT leaking.

Sure.. For some CRAB LEGS!!!

Remove the six nuts you see holding the shroud. 8mm I think
Remove 3 nuts on the top center of the intercooler after removing shroud. These are hex sockets.
Look under intercooler. There are two nuts on a curved bracket to remove.
Remove clamps to turbo hoses.

Wallah, you have removed the intercooler. Have a beer.
