Photographing red in direct sun is always a big ask.
Reds are always best photographed in the shade, or wait until twighlight.
[For the sake of comparison, I will take a photo of the 575 today in the sun to see how the 20D performs.]
I made this tweek in PS...
Greg H.
I duplicated the photo, converted one of them to b&w, and removed the car to show the original colour.
Lots of work, but I wanted a very dark background.
It can be done very quickly by desaturating all colours other than red....
.
.
Thanks Tony

Viken,
one direct sunlight shot.....
Canon 20D
exposure set to auto
whitebalance set to auto
all colour parameters set to zero
colour temp set to 5600k
....in lay terms: walk up, point camera, push button
All said and done, I was pretty impressed given the tough conditions.
I also took this photo:
...to illustrate how photographing a red car in the shade is the best way to acheive the most accurate red.
Hope this helps

Got it! Looks like the SLR is the way to go. What other exposure settings could one use to improve the color in direct sunlight? Would a fast shutter speed help? I tried just about everything with my camera with little or no improvement. Sorry about all these questions. I promise to end it here.

- some of the smaller digitals these days are extremely good with reds, so SLR is not essential [unless you need a good excuse ]
- shutter speed won't help the red situation.
1. - photograph in the shade
2. - whitebalance.
if your camera has a whitebalance setting, try playing with it. it *may* help
No probs, happy to help

I have a few L series lenses. For that photo; 17-35L
Viken
I also have a cheap little Fuji FinePix F420
Now that I think of it, I will do the red-test with it also.....
Go to http://www.dpreview.com
It contains BRILLIANT camera comparisons.

Another really good web site for cameras is http://steves-digicams.com/ . However, when I don't want to lug my Canon DR around - the G5 does an awesome job for our my car photo needs.

Q,...brilliant tweaking ability! So, it looks like if I want the quality, 20D is the way to go? Any recommendation in between? I am still making do with an old Canon PowerShot G1 3.3 MegaPixels and lately it does not hold a charge. Is the 20D user friendly for quick pictures in an "auto" mode for candid shots when in faraway places?
Besides, that Ferrari is one of my favourite cars. Enjoy in good health.
Viken, those cameras you have are for black and white photography (you never realised it since you used to have a black C4S and now the white GT3). For your Ferrari you need to get what Q uses. As for my needs, my car is good old practical silver and anything decent will do though it is nice to be able to film some red stuff once in a while. Seriously though, please let me know if you identify a good compromise solution; otherwise, 20D may be my choice.
