Default 993 Turbo future prices in Canada and U.S

Hello:

Was going to buy a c4s or c2s but thought it over and decided that I really want a 993 tt. Problem is , I don't have the $100,000 that they go for in Canada. My question is where do people in Canada and U.S see 993 tt prices bottoming out at and when is this going to happen. I am shocked that a 10 year old car can still retain 60 to 70 percent value.

I am interested in all opinions but would be very interested in what fellow Canadians think the pricing is going to be, at least educated guess.

All opinions are greatly appreciated.

Also, it terms of percentage how much more is a turbo vs Na in upkeep cost?

Your two questions are somewhat related... here's how. The upkeep on the TT is roughly the same as for the NA cars... with the exception that the turbo units themselves will probably need a rebuild, depending upon how carefully they've been cooled after heavy use. No one can accurately predict what will happen with future car prices, but I think that when more people realize that the maintenance for a TT is barely any different than a NA car, they will become even more desireable.

Tim,

Deals for good turbos are out there, but they are tough to find in Canada. The ideal situation is when a turbo driver is trading his car into the dealership on a GT3 (as what happened to me) or a newer car. If you offer a few thousand more to the owner (above whatever tax credit he's going to get) or to the dealer (and eat the tax costs), you can walk away with a really sweet deal.

Right now, the Canadian price for a really low mileage car (20-40,000km) is in the CAD$90-100k range. The difficulty is in finding a car anywhere, regardless of price, they are just so scarce here. If you don't mind getting a US car, there seem to be tons around and really nice ones seem to sell for between $65-70k with a few wildcards thrown in at the high 50, low 60 range.

As for future prices, I think we'll still see downward pressure on the prices. There are just too many tempting cars in the CAD$100k price range. Everything from new E55 AMG's to used 996 Turbos and eventually, GT3's. The pricing change of used sports cars over the past few years has been astounding. For many years, I tracked the prices of 964 Turbos (as I wanted one) which hovered around the CAD$70-75k range for a long time. In a short period of time (2-3 years), I've seen the values of these cars drop to the low CAD$60k range and now down into the CAD$50's.

At the current prices of turbos in the USA, I'm contemplating picking up another 993 Turbo or even better, a 996 Turbo as a track only car. The watercooled heads would allow me to extract more performance with the stock platform. The pricing is very tempting south of the border...

There are many choices available now for new high performance cars. This puts a lot of pressure on the used market, as the majority of high dollar buyers will go for the new vehicle with a warranty and more readily available financing

I have seen several 996TT's (2001's) selling in the US $80-$85k range with less than 10k miles on them. I have seen several very nice 993TT's with between 40-55k miles selling for between US $50k-$55k. The 964 turbos seem to be around $50k for a very nice example with about 25-30k miles and add another $10-15k for an equally nice 94 turbo 3.6. Even higher mileage 964T's are comanding mid $40's, and very low milage cars are bringing as much as mid $70's. It is a very strange market right now and for some reason I see a great resurgence in the older single turbo cars.

I can't see how the market can drop much more. I am seeing low mileage C4s's and other similar cars with low mileage selling for more than TT's, doesn't makes sense to me. Then again a prestine 996TT for less than $90k and very low mileage is not helping the used 993TT market and is a much quicker reduction in price then we had seen with the 964 and 993 turbos.

Good Luck

Unforunatly the 993TT's sold quickly. I have seen several sell at this price over the past 8 months and was thinking about picking one up but I really want a 96-98 targa that my wife and i can share. I will keep my eyes open and if i see more I will post. I would search the usual places autotrader, hemmings, dupont they are out there, You may also try luxury car network. Pricing is all over the place and it may take several months but they do pop up. It took me 9 months to find my 3.6T, It was worth the wait and the price was right.

If you find a 993tt for the pricing you suggest, do let us know. The only known tt's I heard about or researched myself before buying last Sept. had issues or were salvage titles. I'm sure one will slip through so often at the pricing you suggest, however the 40 to 55k in mileage is huge with a gap of only $5k in sales price.

Agree. If I could have found a low mileage clean 993tt, I sure would have prefered it to my C2S. I have never seen these cars for sub $65k (again, talking about low mileage, no stories, clean condition, etc)

Here's a 1996 993TT that I found on Craigslist.com--unsure of actual condition:

993_996_enthusiast,

Yeah, I saw that too and thought maybe he was referring to some type of muffler by-pass.

i don't think it's too farfetched, i think viperbob picked his up at upper 50's (close to 60) with a decent amount of miles on it.

Call it what you may but they are out there. If you can buy a 9k mile 996TT for $80k why not go for it. One of the 993TT's that sold was sold so that the owner could by a 996TT. I am not saying that the car shouldn't have sold for more but they are out there if you keep your eyes wide open.

Hey, how about that 73 RS that sold on BJ for $90k I am sure many 73 RS owners freaked when the gavel fell on that one. Didn't Watt just buy a 73 clone for close to $60k. I am sure he would have sprung for $90k instead of the $130+ everyone else is asking for the real deal.

The cheap 996TT pricing is hurting the value of all the cars. Unless you have an ultra rare 993TT S low mileage car the values will fall. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Besides, who buys these things as an investment anyway. You buy it because you like it and it is worth what you or soemone else is willing to pay.
