I could handle some flames... I had a restored M715 once that made flames. Aside from the fact that everyone thought the Army was coming, it was quite a crowd pleaser... hehehe...

I have a small video made some time back in an Go-kart track here where you can see the flames coming out of my 3.6T.
Here is the link: http://www.porschespeed.com/porsche.mpg there are 3 links on the website, can't remember which was the best quality.

I was always led to believe that, whilst undeniably dramatic to observe, flames were a sign of a poorly set up engine package particularly with the more modern Motronically controlled cars ?

TB,
I am sure you will hear more accurate opinions, and probably you have better information, but from a purely amateurist POV, I think a number of factors make this happen as you know..rich AFRs (in CIS quite frequent), outside temps and humidity, and the wastegate dumping straight to the air among others.. Motronic obviously calibrates better the AFRs, no need to run rich as the flexibility in mapping allows you to calibrate optimal AFRs/ingnition advance for different RPMs while maintaining safety through knock sensors.
Don't forget that GT cars aka GT3 RSRs throw some very nice flames from their exhausts while in deceleration, be it with Motronic or Motec management systems on board.

Oh good. Now I don't feel so bad.
Apart from the Bad Burrito I had before the last Tracquest event at Big Willlow, I have been unable to shoot out flames, even with straight through exhaust.

Fire is a great way to ward off those pesky tailgaters!
Of course assuming that your body work doesn't catch the flames
I've only ever heard loud pops and seen small light flashes in my rear mirror, but never full blown flames.
Its kinda hard to know whats going on in your tail pipes when the scenery is moving forward that fast.
