Oil Filter Tightening

Oil Filter Tightening
I did an oil/filter change last weekend. In checking the archives, there is a lot of talk warning to tighten the filter properly but I couldn't find what "properly" implied. The shop manual says to tighten the filter manualy until firmly seated then make another 1/2 turn. The OEM filter (and a trusted independent) says to tighten it 1 full turn after seating. I did the 1 full turn and all seems to be fine with the lack of smoke. Which is right and why the discrepancy?

They dont need to be really tight, just tight enough to put a nice squeeze on the o-ring. As Fred H mentioned, half to three quarter turn is typically good..
Sometimes if not quite tight enough, they can seal nicely until some heat cycles later and they start to weep a little oil. Just need another 'flat' or two, and all is good..

I wasn't too worried about the filter leaking since it could be tightened a little more to stop that. My concern was causing the oil seepage back into the turbo and causing smoke on startup.
I've had at least 50 starts since the filter change with no smoke so I guess it's fine at 1 turn.
