Default Ring & Pinion

Does anybody make a different ring & pinion for the 993tt? I'm thinking about changing to make all the gears taller. I want a taller 1st. It's way too short.

When I was researching gear changes for my G64 a few years ago, everyone I talked to said no. I don't know if things changed recently, though.

Keep the ring and pinion and just strategically change a few ratios. Yes 1st gear is painfully low (3.8:1) in my n/a 993. Do you know what ratios are in your ROW-Taiwan spec. gearbox?

Chris
Actually there isn't much info about my Taiwan spec G64.42 transmission.

I know RUF and other tuners do a taller 6th gear kit to get towards a 200 mph V-max, not sure if they do a taller 1st gear. Maybe you could contact them to find out:

www.ruf-automobile.de

or

www.techart.de

Hope you get fixed up.

DV:

I'd just chime in here and offer that changing R&P's is really not the way to achieve what you are trying to accomplish. Its akin to squeezing balloons; you simply transfer a problem from one end to the other. In this instance; changing the R&P makes some gears more useful to the detriment of the others.

The proper way to make the car better is to install the gear ratios you want and quite obviously this is not inexpensive, especially when 1st gear is changed. This one is machined into and integral into the main shaft so the this shaft is replaced when that gear is changed out.

LOL,...There are 12 other 1st gear ratios to choose from and one needs to change the other gears if you raise first,....

FYI, You many choose from:

(17) 2nd gear ratios

(29) 3rd & 4th gear ratios

(26) 5th & 6th gear ratios

As you can see, its not a simple decision.

I hope this helps a little and please let me know if I can be of further assistance in this regard.

Interesting topic John..

Can someone please explain what are the advantages of having a taller 1st.gear as far as acceleration times are concerned? I can understand that with high hp and fast spooling turbos, you do not even get the time to shift before hitting the rev limiter, but in acceleration terms, wouldn't you be faster with the stock ratios?

I am (will be) facing the same issue than Chris, and going to change the main shaft to a stronger one as suggested by Steve in another post, so would the 1st. gear thingy be the right thing to do to improve accel times? Maybe not without the other gears?

Thanks
