Default New 992 vs old 993 turbo

Hey everyone,

in the other thread I posted about a 993 turbo I’m looking at.

im also considering putting that money into a new 992 Carrera s.

has anyone driven both? I know it’s kind of crazy for anyone to be comparing a new car to a twenty year old car - I’ve heard people say they sold their 992 for a 993, so kinda curious to know if there’s something special in the driving experience of the best of the air cooled versus today.

from a value perspective, 993 turbos are probably not going to drop in price, so that’s one thing that I’m thinking about.

Also, just having one seems so much cooler than a new 992, there won’t ever be another whale tail, and there is something really badass about having the last of the air cooled.

I know the right answer is to just go and try to drive them both myself, but I don’t know any 993 turbo owners in my area, Denver Colorado. Would love to hear from those that have driven both!

They weigh about the same.

0-60 is about the same.

The 993 has an intimate cabin and awesome sight lines.

The 992 is larger and luxurious.

Do you want digital or analog?

Owning both would be the penultimate decision.

I think its a valid question to be asking yourself - why buy a 20+ year old Porsche when you can buy one to your specification straight out of the wrapper...? The first problem for me is that by the time you spec a 992S with the options you need to make it 'special' to drive, you are climbing north of $165k before taxes etc. If you like stripper spec'd cars, then not such a big deal.

A friend of mine has a 992S which he likes very much - his was $155k with modest options and rubber interior. He's more into the tech of the car and less about the visceral side, so its a great daily for him.

The 993 is an experience and an event to drive every time you pull it out of the garage - very pure and quite raw; especially with the upgraded turbos. The 992 is a BIG car in comparison and for me looses the true essence of what a 911 should feel like. Don't get me wrong - great cars for daily driving amongst the oblivious SUV with all of the mod cons you need, just not an event.

yeah,

thats what i’m thinking as well. i dont plan on daily driving it, more of a special weekend thing. there aren’t that many videos of people driving their 993 turbos through the canyons so its hard to get a feel for what its like pushed hard. the 992 sounds really great, looks great, but they make so many of the damn things

997.1 turbos will not lose value if bought right today as well. Dip your toes into the pcar world with that while searching for the right 3TT.

yeah that could be a decent way to go.. though i much prefer the whale tail and the look of the 993.

we will never see another whale tail ever again... what a crazy, beautiful, functional piece.

Depends on what you want. If you are going to drive it alot (daily it), I would buy the 992. Creature comforts and technology is just better. If it's a weekend/play car, definitely the 993. I have owned both. 993 is still in the garage and 992 made it 6 months before I got rid of it. I'm also the guy that says if you can only have one porsche, get a newer, more dependable one.

I've driven both and as others have said, it depends on what you're looking for. The 992 is an exceptionally capable car and will outperform a 993 turbo in every category. It will also have all of the latest gadgets, gizmos and creature comforts. What it lacks though, IMHO, is the soul, analog feel, and all those other things that only an old school car can give you. In fairness, my 992 experience was a test drive at a dealer but if it gives you any idea, I wasn't tempted for even a second to trade my 993 for it (or add it).

I have taken my 993 turbo to your state specifically to drive through those canyons and twisties and it was incredible.

The only way you'll know is to drive both and decide. No affiliation but I've seen a couple of 993 turbos for sale at Porsche Colorado Springs store recently. Might try them. Good luck.

Yeah porsche Colorado Springs had a 1996 turbo for awhile for ~138k it was nice. I agree with the sentiments here I just specced a nice 992 i would be happy with and it was 155k.... and to have a manual in a 992 just doesn’t feel right... such a modern car and to insist on a manual thats half a second slower, doesn’t feel like it fits the character of the car, if that makes sense.

I don't have a 992, but I do have a 991.2 Touring. In the case of the GT3, the manual feels appropriate, but I do understand your point. It's my daily. The 993TT is the perfect sports car, in my opinion. Can't imagine better lines, better size, better visibility, or frankly, a better turbo car. Damn I love the 993TT!

While both 911's they couldn't be more different. Which one is more desirable is something only you can decide.

i would do a 993tt any day. i sold my last 993tt a couple years ago and regretted it from day. i bought a 15 gt3 to replace it, liked the car a lot, been back and forth for months about getting rid of the gt3, it had original motor and i was always concerned with that. as of 10 day ago i was keeping the gt3, however, late last week a 97 993tt came on market, trade was made and took possession yesterday, i am again reminded why i have been driving porsche for 25 years, i am in love again, there's nothing like the 993tt IMO, the intimate cabin space, the look of the car has no equal, the air cooled experience, no other. ZERO regrets trading the gt3, sure the gt3 was quicker but i have 991TTS of i need speed. get the 993tt, upgrade the suspension, get a tune and enjoy it
