Default 993TT buying advice

Hi all,

I've been an avid reader of this forum the last couple of weeks, as one of this years' good intentions is to enlarge my small 911 collection with a 993. I first considered a C2S, but am now focussing on the turbo, partly based on what I've read on Rennlist.

I've spotted a car that meets my criteria (color/mileage/maintenance history), and will be travelling this Friday to see the car in person. The car is being sold by an official Porsche Dealership, which gives me more confidence. Two questions:
- the dealership decided to completely repaint the car (in its original color), instead of repairing the chips in the paint. Will this affect the value of the car?
- the car has about 50k miles, but on the pictures, I see quite some wear on steering wheel and shifter. Is this normal, or in indication of tampering with the odometer?

Looking forward to your insights!

First, if you have the budget, I'd definitely suggest a turbo, so you're on the right track.

In my opinion, a repaint will always affect value. You can't repaint a car as well as it was originally painted at the factory. Does the seller have pics of the entire process? Pics of the chips in the paint before repainting? Was the shop that did the repaint well qualified and reputable? I'd question the story of repainting the whole car because of some paint chips. Dig further.

Wear and tear is hard to judge. Do you have any pics? If it really seems excessive, it might go hand-in-hand with why they repainted the whole car because of some chips in the paint. Again, dig further.

Are you buying the car to drive or store? 50K miles is no longer a garage queen. A repaint will draw questions down the road. Do you have photos of car before repaint?

As long as the car is not represented and priced as a pristine showroom car then it may be a buy. Just know that you will have to spend additional 10-20% of your purchase price into the car mechanically to refresh all working parts that may have worn out or timed out.

Good luck on your search.

Ray at RPM in Houston always has a few very nice 993 Turbos. There is also a very nice Turbo, PTS Night Blue Metallic, at Isringhausen in Springfield Illinois.

The pictures above show the status of the car before it was resprayed. The paint job was done/coordinated by an official Porsche dealership, so I suppose it was done properly. I'll know more tomorrow, when I see the car in person. Thanks @bbs993tt for your feedback.

No @chsu74 , I gave up trying to keep my cars low milage. I'm too much tempted to drive them... Last year, I've put 10k miles on my 991.2GT3, which was supposed to be a garage queen as well .

The mechanical stuff should be sorted. I'd have a one year full guarantee on the car.

Thanks for your suggestions @LexVan . I'm fond of Night Blue Metallic (same as car I will see tomorrow), and in fact I didn't know Midnight Blue was a PTS color. Priced at USD199k, the car in Illinois doesn't come cheap either. This being said, I'd prefer to source my car in Europe, where I live.

Earlier today, a 35k miles 993TT went for USD106k at Bonhams in Scottsdale. The color combo is not really pleasing my eye, would this have caused the fairly low price?

Is it me or does that steering wheel and shift **** look like there is more than 50K miles of wear?

If you have a one year warranty then put 6-8,000 miles on it ASAP. You will see how many parts all of a sudden need attention or replacement.

Yes market on aircooled porsches have softened quite a bit. The grey interior does not help...

That's exactly what I thought. On the other hand, would an OPD sell & deliver guarantee on a car with a tampered odometer?

It is very hard to detect. You can unplug the odometer with little difficulty and plug it back in before inspections to show that mileage increased a bit. There is no ECU logs to confirm and match until 996s.

To me, it also looks like excessive wear on the steering wheel and shift **** for 50,000 miles. Hard to tell what the rest of the car looked like before the repaint, but I still find it curious that they'd choose to repaint the entire car for some front end chips. Also, what's the odd switch below the hazard blinker switch? Regardless, good luck!!

Thanks all for your advice. I've seen the car in person yesterday, and it looked so much better than on the pictures. In short: we came to a deal, so I can call me the proud owner of a 993TT! I'll collect the car in Madrid early February, for a 3 day, 1200 mile trip on scenic roads back home. Looking forward to it!
