Default 19" vs 18" wheels on TT

Do any of you know what the advantages or disatvantages are of going with a 19" vs a 18" rim?
i am not talking about aesthetics.

I am in the process of deciding on a new wheel/tire set up.

Either going for the cargraphics racing wheel or the Artec MK model

Here is my real world observation. I had 19" HRE 542's, 19x9 245/35 and 19x11 295/30 on my TT when I bought it. I was actually very surprised at how smooth the ride was with them. They added grip up front was nice as well. I have since swapped them out for 18" HRE 540's, 18x8.5 225/40 and 18x11 295/30.

I think the ride actually is a little harsher (maybe likely be due to riding on Pilot SC) but steering is much more go cart like and it is NOTICEABLY quicker with the smaller overall diameter set up.

Does changing to a 19" setup affect the ABS?

adsc4s-
Are the wheels on your avatar 19" or 18"? Is it your car?
I love those wheels, where can I source them from?
I would like to put 19" split rims on, but worried about the ABS etc being affected.

Rich, that is my car in my avatar with my old 19" HRE 542's. You can call HRE directly and they will give you a list of vendors and you can probably get them from Wheel Enhancement as well.

adegraeve, I like the look of the reverse lip 18" wheel and I think the 19" just looks too large for a 993. Performance has improved with the smaller diameter wheel and tires are generally cheaper and there is a greater selection.

Whar exactly does reverse lip mean. i looked at the HRE 540R you purchased. beautifull!
They look very similar to the Cargraphic reacing wheel. Any reason of picking one over the other???

Hi Alain,
The reverse lip wheel does not have the traditional "step" on most rims. Therefore, with an 18" wheel, you use a 19" face which basically meets the lip at a 90* angle.
Others can probably give you a better description than I just!

It'd been discussed in the archives many, many times before, but here are some thigns from the top of my head:

a) 19" have fewer tire choices

b) 19" are heavier --> theorteically less handling, braking, acelleration performance. Although it may not matter in practice. But adding an additional 5 pounds to EACH wheel probably has some effect.

c) Whenever you change front/rear wheel diameters, you should strive to keep the diameter ratios the same as stock. Otherwise, you will either burn out your viscous coupling, or get some weird f/r power transfer driveability issues

d) 19" have less protection from pot holes ( depends on your road conditions )

You would probably be better off spending your money on new suspension ( if you haven't already.. ) if you are concerned about performance. Or if you are a true performance hound, spend your money on driving lessons. That'll give you more lasting effect than any mod that you could do.
