Default Malibu drive to Santa Barbara Feb 22...

Meeting at 7am, Von's parking lot in Malibu, drive to Santa Barbara, food at Phil's dealership. Here is a proposed route.

I had a great time a few weeks back by taking hwy 150 through Santa Paula, through Ojai and then on out to the coast to SB. Getting from Malibu to Santa Paula via several fun canyons to the 23 through Westlake, on to Moorpark and Fillmore, then down the 126 to Santa Paula across the 150 through Ojai and out to the coast and up to SB. Total trip (TOUR) time I estimate at 2.5 hours. "...a three hour tour..."

More details to follow but need a head count. Thanks.

OG, perhaps we could meet you in Fillmore, as I imagine you will go through there anyway on your way to SB. The original group will probably arrive there about 9:00 to 9:30, and that sounds about like your timeframe. I'm not familiar with Filmore other than driving through, but I'm sure we could find some junction to meet.

Fillmore is definately a waypoint on my course there Lee.
I have stopped there before for a Dr Pepper on the way
home from Pt Mugu but I dont remember where. another
possiblity is to meet at one of the 645,390 fruit stands
Or Piru but that may be too much outta the way for you guys.
Lets look on the map and see. Of course I dont have permission
from my gulag commander....er... my wife yet. I'll talk to her
tonite and see what she says.

Paul, sounds like a plan. We could probably meet at the junction of 23 and 126 as the Malibu contingent will be coming north on 23 and turning west on 126 at that junction. Perhaps others might want to meet up there. Steve? Scott? I'm sure we can finalize as date gets close. Be sure to bring a FSR radio.

I'm probably in. It depends if Karen and Grace are coming as to which group I go with. Grace is always up for anything, but Mommy-O will take exception to the spiritedness of the usual group with aforementioned 5 Y.O. daughter in the back.
If we go "en famille", it will be a staider drive.
Also Lee, the 23 does not join the 126 (cop alley). We'd have to go 23 to Grimes Canyon to Filmore, like we did previously, and meet OG somewhere in between there and Santa Paula.
I still have that arrangement with the sherrif. You know, the one where I don't speed anymore and he doesn't take my license away....

Lee whats an FSR radio?? I think I can be at that corner by
9AM will that work or is that too late??
Fillmore. 23 and 126
Still havent confirmed it with Fraulien Guggenbuehl.
Scott according to my map software 23 runs into 126 right
in Downtown Fillmore and continues on to be A street.
Is this not right?? My map shows 23 going to Grimes canyon
and then on into FIllmore.

I wouldn't be surprised that the 23 freeway becomes Moorpark Road, and then heads up over Grimes Canyon and over to Filmore (where it intersects with the 126). Hmmm..... I can meet you guys in Moorpark, at the intersection of New LA Ave (118) and Moorpark Road (23?)... at the "Grinder" coffee shop parking lot. We can meet oldguy in Fillmore. Does this sound like an OK idea?

Scott, my map shows that 23 and 126 intersect, but maybe you know something I don't.

Steve, meeting at 118 and 23 sounds fine. I think we go right by there.

Paul, an FRS radio is a walkie-talkie. I think it stands for Family Radio Service. We can communicate over the radios while driving, to point out points of interest, etc. Fred, our fearless leader, is able to point out hazards ahead (rocks, bicyclists, etc.) over the radio while driving fast though the twisties. Not sure how he does it, although his tiptronic must help.

You can get them at Radio Shack, Circut City, Best Buy, basically anywhere that sells electronic gagets, and lots of places on the internet. Just search FRS Radio on the internet and you'll find a lot of information. I recommend Motorola, but there are lots of brands. Most sell between $29 and $59 or up for two radios, depending on features. You don't need a fancy one, the basic one will do. As a byproduct, the kids love to play with them.

Paul, all the FRS radios have 14 channels, and the better ones have secondary channels called codes. My Motorola Talkabout radio has 14 channels and 38 codes for each channel for a total of 532 channels that can be used.

As some people have the radios with the basic 14 channels only, on past drives we haven't used the codes. Whatever you get, it will work with the group as long as it is a FRS radio.

The point of FRS radios is they all have the same 14 standard channels, and they don't need a license. They have limited range, with the basic ones having about 2 miles line of sight, and the high end ones something like 4 or 5 miles.

Before the drive, practice driving around tight corners under full boost while talking on the radio.
