Default 993TT purchase

Found a 1997 993TT with 450 Factory power kit. Car has 100.000Km / 62000 Miles and it was serviced always at a Porsche dealer. It was owned by a car colector and according to the dealer itīs is very good condition, he can even put me in contact with the previous owner. One year oficcial Porsche warranty.
Should I make a compression and leak test to this car? I think itīs not necessary due to Porsche warranty, what would you do? Is 62000Km to many miles for a 993TT assuming it was assisted at a Porsche dealer and reasonable well cared? Car is in Germany and 450Hp upgrae was made at Porsche dealer in 1999. Thanks in advance.

If it's a full warranty I wouldn't worry about it. 62,000 miles is no problem as long as it's figured in the price. Good luck...post pictures if you buy!

My 1996 993TT has 60,000+ miles on it and it runs like new. Things that have been changed:
1. leaky steering rack
2. corroded aux fan resistors
3. hydraulic clutch slave cylinder
4. worn-out shocks (PSS-9s just added last month)

Things that will need some attention in the next year or two:
1. clutch (I'll get the LWF assemply)
2. turbo units (I'll have mine rebuilt as k16/k24 hybrids)
3. leaky power steering pump (no "upgrade" here)

These are all very common and mostly expensive, maintenance items on 993s, so be sure these are carefully looked after. Best luck.

I wouldn't rely on the Porsche certification - you need to get compression and leakdown tests done. At 60k or so, you're just at the point where premature valve guide wear could be a problem ($$$$ to fix). Also, if the car was driven hard when cold, it could have compression issues. You won't know without having the tests done. Valve guide wear is an incremental (as opposed to sudden failure) kind of thing - I wouldn't want to have to argue with the dealer whether or not it's covered by the warranty.

You say that the 450 bhp power upgrade was done in 1999 - did this include new turbos, or just a performance chip and the "Turbo S" additional oil cooler? If the latter, I would add the possibility of new turbos to the list.

Another common problem with 993TT is bent first gear shafts in the transmission from "drag strip" launches.

All in all, a PPI from a independent shop that knows turbo Porsches is the only way to go.

Good luck!

The 450 hp kit includes k24's plus DME and oil cooler.

J., when I bought my car in 4/02 with 47,000 miles, I had a full PPI by a recommended P garage, including a compression test but no leakdown. Only a few months after I bought it, and after I had driven it hard at a Willow Springs DE awith no problems, CEL (Cash Evaporation Light) when on. After several trips to dealer for diagnosis, did leak down test. Three cylinders were out of spec., and had expensive valve job to replace exhaust values, valve guides, etc.
Maybe leak down test at PPI would have spotted the issue. Photos of my torn apart engine are posted here around 11/02, and can probably be located by searching.

Absolutely get a compression/leakdown. A warranty will only repair things that are not serviceable. Your engine could be worn, but as long as it runs well and doesn't smoke like crazy, the warranty will not rebuild it.

Hello to all!

Well, Iīm almost on the same situation as J.Seven, I used to have a boxster, wanted to get boxster S 2004 but now Iīm in love with 2 cars: a 1997 Black 993TT with 18.000 miles and another, in silver with 10.000 miles...

The black one is the one that I can get a better price, plus it looks brand new, exterior and interior in superb condition, while the silver, althought the low mileage, wasnīt properly taken care. (A friend of mine told me he used to drive to the farm and let the dogs ride inside the car, can u believe in it ?!!!)

Any hints what should I look on this car ? Itīs a 993TT 1997 US Spec and the owner told me it has the 430hp turbo s kit. How can I know for sure that it has this kit?

Thanks in advance!

Conrado

Autobahn, I located in Portugal.
I will be on Germany next week to see this 993TT and another black 993TT from 98. If you live nearby Munster, it would be great for us to meet and see this 450Hp beast
