Gearbox Noise
Hi all... Again.
I just have a curiosity question regarding the '95 gearbox. My car makes the characteristic whirring in first gear, especially on the overrun, and also makes some noise in the others, although virtually undetectable, it doens't dissapear when the clutch is disengaged while driving along the motorway.
I couldn't really care less about it because you have to expect some casualties when it has to deal with over 400 BHP, but was wondering what other owners are experiencing?
Thanks in advance
Alan

The P.O. of my car replaced bent first gear shaft when he did the mods at around 16,000 miles.
I'm now at 40,000 miles and have no gearbox noise or vibration at all.

Alan,
I think you know that you are experiencing the dreaded "bent first gear" syndrome that is pretty common on all the 993 TTs, including the 97s, which have a slightly stronger first gear than he 1996 models. Mine has also been replaced under warranty by a previous owner with the 97 gearset, and is quiet. Changing out the gear is an expensive operation, and unless there is other gearbox work you want or need done, and can tolerate the noise (turn up the stereo), I would learn to love it.
