Post Gear ratios for 993 and 996...

Just a reminder. The 996 has shorter gear ratios (quite similar to the G50/21 RoW gearbox), so that when you compare the acceleration of the 996 versus the 993 in the U.S., the 993 has a disadvantage from the very start. With the 993TT and the 996TT the situation is just the other way around. Acceleration figures are to the 993TT's advantage, since it has shorter gear ratios.

Actually, I've always wondered about this. If you look at the 996's gear ratio's, they are an excellent configuration, and very similar to the G50/21 setup on non-US (and non-Swiss, Austrian, etc..) 993 gearboxes.

I guess since the 996 is so much quieter than 993's, that's were they could dial-in the proper gear ratio and still pass strict noise abatement rules.

Yes, that's what I thought all along until I got the /21 gearbox. With it, I still can't keep up with an average '00-on 996 of close to or similar weight. The 996 engine's torque band must be fatter.

Yes, Viken, but aren't you handicaped with the 993 4S? Heavier than the normal 993, 4 WD, higher drag coefficient?

No, I was comparing my car with similarly heavy 996 versions like the Cabriolet.

Viken,
How much more do the 996's pull you? Now that you have tracked the car with the LWF and G50/21 would you in hindsight have made 2nd gear taller? When my G50/21 comes in I am going to replace the 1st and 2nd shift forks and go to steel syncros but my shop wants to replace 2nd gear as well. What do you think of the stock G50/21 stock set up?
After all of this I would hate to have a 996 blow by me!

I am very happy with my /21 gearbox for the type of driving I do. All the gears seem just about right for all-around acceleration under all road conditions. I can cruise around in 6th at 2500 rpms and accelerate from there without a downshift.

On the track, I still feel the need for slightly shorter 3rd to 5th gears but I can live with what I have for the little track driving I am doing now.
