Hi group,

I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with this shop?

I'm in need of a transmission rebuild for a 993 turbo and they offer a rebuilt one for $7500 euro with core exchange which seems like a great deal.

Cost to rebuild my trans is more than twice that. Bearing failure took out ring and pinion and several gears.

I let them know my core exchange is in bad shape and offered pics and estimate.

I got back wire transfer instructions (only payment option) and an invoice.

I'm a little nervous to say the least about this transaction.

Thanks

Assuming this is the place in Karlsruhe, DE.

I was referred to them by someone reputable once when I was looking for a rare part that's out of production.

If they screw you you can pay me to drive up there and knock them over the head since Karlsruhe is where my girlfriend went to college and where her favorite shoe store is.

Years ago, back in the day when I still was was in Germany, I heard some stories about these guys, and they were far from good. One of the words used in those conversations was "crooks"...

However, that's just hear-say and gossip in all fairness. Personally, I've never done business with them. Just be cautious if you do.

Lot's of reputable transmission builders here in the US and you have some leverage just in case you are unhappy. You won't if you buy from Germany. And keep in mind most of the transmissions you get from Germany have been rebuild for a reason; they go a bit faster over yonder and drive the he'll out of 'em. Ask me how I know...

Well; there's a big thread at PFF on this shop here;
https://www.pff.de/porsche/index.php...-in-karlsruhe/

Use Google Chrome to translate.

Basically, it sounds like the owner is a bit of a dick but I don't see anyone commenting on poor quality or being taken advantage of.

This post seemed most relevant:
"Freisinger helped and supplied me - at quite normal list prices! He is also a specialist for transmission overhauls, since a few experts are probably busy with him. Drive even a 915 with cooling and lock of it, completely overhauled, fair bought and it runs very well."

Freisinger is a famous racing team. That's all I know about them.

If the offer seems too good to be true, maybe it is not true?

Did they offer any records or report on the rebuild? Photos, list of changed parts etc.?
I would not pay for a rebuild without knowing what has been done and in what condition the re-used parts are.
I neither would not buy something like this overseas, unless I was very familiar with the seller.

If I were in your shoes, I'd have the box rebuilt by a reputable shop in the US.

Thanks guys,

Appreciate the responses. It's a difficult decision for me. If the price delta was less it would be a no brainer to have it repaired locally.

Thanks Juha,

That is a good suggestion and I will ask for that info. I have the same feeling about being too good to be true, and I know if the box is repaired locally it will be perfect.

It doesn't necessarily have to be too good to be true. When you don't have the pay VAT prices are often cheaper in Germany due to the weak state of the euro right now.

Cost and so price should be contingent on work needing to be done. Something that can not be determined until the box is opened up. An upfront price means someone is leaving money on the table or there may be additional charges once the transmission is opened up.
Stock original Carrera diffs. are a dime a dozen as many shops have a used or rebuilt on hand from a customer car that has a limited slip diff. upgrade. When I had my transmission serviced it needed one of the large bearings as it had signs of overheating, It needed Synchros for gears 1&2 and I asked that 3d be replaced as well. I requested the originally replaced parts back and noted that third gear's synchro showed almost no visible wear. About five years ago it cost me $5k at a Porsche specialty shop where they do lots of G50 work.

What was your labor charge?

I sent you an email...maybe even a PM?

I would think long and hard about sending my invaluable transmission overseas. The $8,100 US is the least of your worries, what if they send you junk? You won't know until you drive the car, or until you have a god mechanic crack open the box and inspect the quality of the parts. Are they new parts? used parts?

If you don't get an email from me, PM me with an updated email address.

Blast to the past...I vaguely recall supplying you with a DME relay in a hotel parking lot in Lancaster CA. We were doing a POC track event. Could that have happened?

All the nest....

Hey Martin,

Good to hear from you and I got your e-mail.

I think I still have have that same relay in the car, but I do carry a spare

I hear you about the transmission. I asked about the parts and was told all parts showing use are changed, and gearboxes are very high standards.

I would have the box opened and checked when I got it.

Still mulling it over because the huge price delta.

Default The Box

"Hey Martin,

Good to hear from you and I got your e-mail...." I will send you one (1) more email on this topic.

I am still taking my car to the track...I have been exercising in gingerly (whatever that means) for 16 years...never any major problems. It seems my car loves to go to the track, and always invites me along: I never refuse.

I just ran my first National Automobile Sport Association (NASA) time trial, in TT4 class. Great experience...will do a repeat in June, doing a POC event in May at Willow Springs.

All the best to you and yours.
