Default Smells like burnt rubber!

Everytime I get out of my C2 after a ride I feel a strong smell of burnt rubber from the rear tires even though I've driven very carefully and calmn.

Could this have anything to do with my 18" Turbo rims and tires?
Someone said they shouldn't be placed on a 993 C2, just the TT and the 996. They also said I'll wear my tires out in 6 months?

The 18" Turbos on my '96 C2 was a factory installed option and I've had no troubles with them. I think it's just the '95s that had some trouble because the extra vibration caused the rear or side windows to pop out (they were secured differently in '95) so Porsche recommended against the install.

On the rubber smell, you should definitely check the clearance, especially on the inside of the fender where it's harder to see, but beyond that I've got no good answers.

Thomas,

Any noise while driving? Is their any visible sign of the tires scrubbing? Are you sure the smell isn't a slipping clutch?

FYI

Take a look at your alternator and fan belts. If they're slipping a bit, they will smell like burnt rubber.

Cheers,

Do a search on burning rubber or burnt rubber smell. There is a smell that many have discribed as rubber burning that is quite normal for 993. See if your smell sounds (if that is possible) to what others describe. If not have it checked out.

I've had the same problem - get it checked NOW.

One day occasional smell of rubber, next, car filled with smoke as the alternator belt was slipping so much. No warning lights on, no squealling, no warning! Scared the S#1t out of me though.

Try a different type of gas (fuel/petrol) - got rid of my "rubber" smell that way.
