Default Stuck (rusted) parking brake

Hi everyone

I hoped this was a common thing but haven't seen it in the archive.

It's only been about 10 days but the brakes seem to have rusted stuck. The car has been parked with the handbrake on and now won't budge. The handbrake seems to release OK. (The weather has been cold and wet)

I had this years ago with a VW beetle, and just needed to give the brakes a good bang with a block of wood and a hammer to release them.

Is this the right thing to do? Should I make sure I don't hit the caliper?

Before I bought my car I dreamed of following in the footsteps of Bozo, but it seems I've fallen at a hurdle Bozo wouldn't even have noticed!

Thanks in advance...

Do a search. This has been discussed before. It has something to do with washing your car with the parking brake on. Could be the wet weather as well.

Thanks again!

I have read the thread and it seems that other people have managed to free the stuck brakes by driving forward.

I did try this last night, but was worried about how hard to rev to do this.

I'm also worried about the brakes suddenly coming free as there is a wall a couple of feet in front of where I am parked.

Is the hammer/wood thing still a good thing to try? Has anyone fixed this problem without revving the nuts out of the car?

Try reverse.

Thanks for all the help - it finished in a bit of an anti climax.

I put it in reverse and kept the power on, it only took a tiny bit to get the brakes unstuck - no wheel spin, no flying gravel - I feel like I just handed a jar to someone to open and watched them open it easily - I must have loosened it !
