+1. Agreed. The 993 RoW 3.8l engine option "isn't all that" and positively not a "beast" in any language. Spirited yeah, beast not so much. The cost of the OEM 3.8l kit alone is ludicrous, some say "obscene". Agreed, not to mention the price of a proper installation .. this does not come cheap...
In 2000 the coupe spent some time at PAG's Werk 1 Zuffenhausen shop having the MY96 gearbox installed, F/R RoW fascia and a couple of TUV requirements for Reg/plates etc... When inquiring about also fitting the available 3.8 kit,,, the Werk 1 folks discouraged that idea big time. Talking me down off the ledge was more like it... Went on to borrow a PAG executive/fleet '98 993 C2S 3.8 coupe for better part of a weekend and it was nice. It could even scoot up autobahn A6. But at stupid level money? Not so much.
A 993 C2S 2WD fitted with a TPC super charger kit w/inter-cooler, gearbox tweaks coupled with proper suspension settings is a "Beast"

Attempting to make a 993 faster is just a losing proposition except for going the forced induction route.
Building a NA 3.8 "beast" is in reality only a baby-kitten at-best which my v6 Rav4 can beat; worse yet, the cost is simply obscene for those few extra hp you will hardly feel.
Best bet, sell the car and combine that with the money you were going to use to upgrade the 993, and buy the car you really want performance-wise, whatever that may be.

I'm being told the best bang for the buck is to change the hearing to g50-32 and leave the motor alone. This coupled with weight reduction and suspension may provide what I am seeking.

Rudy did a great job on the car before I came to own her. He's becoming something of a mentor to me on these cars. This is my first P car, coming from the BMW world. In my 25 years of life, I've owned all the cool BMWs of the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, but I figured it was time to dip my toes in the 911 pool. I mostly lurk, but I'm always reading.
You are correct. I'll take a high mileage car over a 35k mile car that was new 20 years ago. I can name more than a few rubber bushings and seals that will require immediate attention. A car that isn't driven regularly will go bad.
Case in point: I have a 96 TT with 40k miles, sitting in my warehouse for storage at the present time. Hasn't been moved in over a year at the owner's request. Guess what is leaking oil all over the place? TURBOS. I remind him every month, but he seems not to care. Oh well. I can only do so much to help.

As an owner of a 4.0l Lightweight beast (390hp and 2750lb), the experience is fantastic. My car is GT3 fast, has better power to weight than a 993TT and that's with me in the car and the 993TT driverless, its also nimble because of the weight...
However the transmission sucks, and is the one thing that holds the car back from its full potential. Transmission is one of those things that gives benefits with the stock engine and then with added power and rev's truly comes alive.
Also, the cost of admission for the transmission is alot lower than an engine build.
As for altitude, nothing beats forced induction and the price of a TPC and a transmission will most likely be less than a full blown engine rebuild.
The recipe: Save Weight, suspension mods, transmission rebuild, and a TPC Supercharger and you will be then looking at modding your 964 Turbo as is won't feel fast anymore...

I would also consider installing the Fabspeed Sportcats mated to Fister II's. You will knock off another 30 pounds of dead weight, and add a 10 HP boost to power.

the 'radiator' is up front in the right near the oil cooler, but all the IC's Ive seen are in continuity with the air needing to be cooled . similar on the earlier photo posted above mine.

Re-gear all the way! Imo, its the best way to change the character and performance of the car especially if the motor is stock with or without bolt on mods. Both the Steve's in the thread agree the transmission regear is the way to go and if you have the means.

Back in 2009, the cost was $6-9k, I wonder how much it would be now.
