Default New Member Saying Hello

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to say hello to all you owners of my favorite(and hopefully next) car --- 911 (993). I've been reading the forums for a while now, and have gained a wealth of information already. I really want to step up to an AWD C4 or C4S from my RWD 5-speed Mercedes and maybe even join some of you at a future meet/driver's ed track event. Until then, thanx for the great info.

Welcome the the porsche matrix... there is no turning back from mods and wasting company time on this site. (sorry for the blatant attempt to get my posts past 40)

Default Newbie #2!!!

Sorry for playing tag-along, but since Giancarlo started a newbie thread I thought I'd hop on the bandwagon (welcome to Rennlist, by the way, Giancarlo!!).

I made my first post in the OT forum, and I've only been a member of Rennlist for a week or two. Obviously, from my sig, I don't own a 993 yet. However, based on the research I've done, I'm really starting to lean toward owning a 993 as my first Porsche. I will be very active on Rennlist until I make my purchase (3-4 years from now) because I want to know everything I can about these cars before I own one. It will help me make a better decision when I go into a dealership or approach a seller.

Here are some questions I have, both as a student/newbie/enthusiast.

First, I want to know if I can really afford a Porsche 993, because I want to set realistic goals for myself. I should be making around $50-60K out of grad school, and $45K during my administrative residency. I have never made that kind of money, so I wanted to throw the question out to those of you that do. Could I own/insure (clean record)/maintain a Porsche 993 on that salary??

Secondly, what can I do in the mean time to learn more about the 993? Do you guys regularly schedule get-togethers? And more importantly, WOULD A NON-PORSCHE OWNER BE WELCOME AT THESE EVENTS? I'm not just some kid who's dreaming here... If I set my goal to buy a 993 out of grad school, I will accomplish it. I'm just looking for a group of guys to be mentors for me so that I can be a knowledgeable owner, not just some guy who bought the nameplate for looks alone.

With all that said, GREETINGS EVERYONE! I'm looking forward to getting to know you, and I'll do my best to search before I post so that I don't annoy you senior members.

Ciao Giancarlo! Welcome!

Andrew,
I think you can afford a Porsche on the salary you'll be making, with decent 993's dipping very close to the $30K mark and lots of 'affordable' Boxsters floating around. A clean 993 AWD, 993 Turbo, (or even a Cayenne) might be stretching your budget a little thin when there are other things to consider, like if you are setting up a household. It is all a matter of choice, you can easily spend more on a new, fully loaded pickup truck than you would on a nice '95 993.

The insurance is high on 993's, even if you are an old fart like me, with a clean driving record. As always it is a good idea to call your insurance company to see exactly how much they are going to gouge you before making a car purchase.

As far as "get togethers" go, I know you cannot join the PCA unless you own a Porsche, but you may want to see if they will let you attend the local meetings anyway, it doesn't seem an awful lot to ask, but that is just my opinion and your results may vary.

You could check for local Driver's Ed events, and PCA Autocrosses, there's never been an admission fee at any I have attended unless you are driving. There are always plenty of people around who want to talk "car talk", and you can pick up some good info. You can also get a look at what I feel is the best thing to do with a Porsche: drive it hard.

As you are already finding out, Rennlist is an incomparable source of information. Also check out Robin's web site: http://www.p-car.com/ there is a ton of stuff there as well.

Welcome,

Andrew,

Yes, not only is this the friendliest and most informative BB I've been on, it is THE worst place to visit if you don't want to spend money on your beloved P-car. I came here a couple of years ago and "just" wanted to learn more about keeping my car maintained.....he he he....
Resistance is futile...Welcome!

Welcome Giancarlo and Andrew!

Andrew, as far as maintenance goes, I have done two oil changes and had the belts replaced on my 993 C4S since purchasing it in February. Obviously not a huge amount of money.

But, then there was the HRE's, PSS9's, silver crests, 3 spoke steering wheel, strut brace, euro lights, turbo s ducts. Next on the list could be a close ratio gearbox, a chip and a supercharger.

These cars are cheap to own but being a member of Rennlist will cost you and arm and a leg!

No doubt about it. Been a member for close to a year and I've had a $1,800 Alpine stereo installed, $395- HID upgrade, new front tires, and a ride height adjustment and alignment. And also purchased some mufflers on this list that did not work out. This is year one of ownership. Year two may see: new rotors and pads, dye my sport seats and possibly a 60K service.

Welcome Andrew and Giancarlo!

Andrew,
BAR drives (Bay Area Rennlist) usually have a few interesting non-Porsches that are very welcome, I'll bet other Rennlist drives are the same.

Only you can answer the affordability question. Figure 35K purchase after all taxes, etc, for a reasonable 95. Budget 2K per year for misc expenses and maintenance. Since you mention student I assume you are in your early-mid 20's, expect a fairly high insurance payment.

So: $500/mo payment, $180/mo maint set-aside, $120/mo full coverage insurance = $800/mo. Shop around for payment and insurance rates, and do most of the maint yourself, and maybe you can get as low as $600/mo. Don't kid yourself on the maint costs, these cars are reliable, but when something does break, it's expensive. You won't spend 180 each month, but you might spend 2K in one day.

At 60K gross salary you can expect a bit under 40K net, or around 3K/mo.

In CA it would be tough. If you stay in SC it might be easier as I assume housing costs are reasonable.

IMHO, get your housing in order and set aside enough money to make a significant down-payment before you spring to a 993. In the meantime, get a nice 911 SC for $12K and enjoy it until your finances are ready.

Or get the 993 and live in a tent. Not unreasonable now that I think about it.

Good luck,
