Post Fire extinguisher questions (with pics)

I'd like to add a Safecraft 2.5 lb. Halon fire extinguisher to the 993TT for DE events (and for general safety). Two questions:

(1) What's the best way to mount the extinguisher? I've found the following systems:

- Brey Krause (Can the seat be moved fore and aft with this in place?)

- 928 Specialists billet bracket (Great looks, but would appear to require drilling unless it can be mounted to the Brey Krause mount - anyone tried this?)

I've also seen pics of the extinguisher mounted to a rollbar. Since I'm about to add a DAS bar to my car, should I consider this (or is it a potential dangerous flying projectile coming from behind your head)?

(2) Best price?

I initially tried OG Racing, but their extinguishers seem to be pretty pricey at $129 for red and $149 for chrome. 928 Specialists offers the red for $68 and aluminum vs. chrome models for $93, $105, or $168 (depending on fanciness). ioportracing lists the red unit for $88.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Anir,
I've got the B-K piece that I install prior to track events. Yes you can move the seat but the forward movement in limited by around 5 inches. The unit is well built and fits perfectly.

I went to my local fire extinguisher shop that services my office. They had the halon-like (forget what it is called but it won't make as big a mess as others) unit for $80. I leave it in my trunk when it isn't mounteed in front of the seat....

The B-K mount is excellent and very unobtrusive. It's the standard deal around here. Re the OG prices-- their extinguisher is a *light* 2 lb. Halon unit, and Halon is what you want. AFFF is swell, but all things being equal, Halon works best (while admitedly being environmentally unfriendly). So-- balance the need to keep Bambi happy vs. your desire not to become chicken fricassee, and you come up with Halon as your fire-supressant of choice.

(Self-serving dept.-- I have a brand new B-K mount and OG Halon ext. I am taking it off the car next week--installed a 5-litre electrical system.)

Tell me what system you went with and its aprox $ if you don't mind. If you want to email me off line that would be appreciated.
Thanks

Though you might be bored with carbon parts, here is a carbon fiber fire bottle with a lightweight hose and an alloy bracket mounted to the tunnel behind the transmission.

Yeah, that's a cool fire bottle all right. But let's spend some *real* money here. What you want is the Safety Devices FLAT carbon-fiber bottle in reddish carbon tint. The (fire-proof) cat's pyjamas, and only about $1k. Pic is on their Website if you've just gotta have one...

Curtis, DC, and Greg,

Thanks for the vote on the BK mount. DC, if Greg hasn't beat me to the punch, I might be interested in buying your equipment. BTW, the extinguishers I listed are all Halon.

Robert,

If you ever saw my interior, you'd know what a sucker I am for CF. Got some on the Duc as well. I'd love to know where you purchased your unit.

Thanks again.

Actually, the Safety Devices unit is a system that requires installation and plumbing. Additionally, if put into production, this is less expensive than that and, if anyone cares, the non tinted carbon fiber probably goes with a wider variety of interior colors and materials.

Anir,
It is all yours I don't need the mount, I was interested in which system Lee changed to. I have my extinguisher mounted to my roll cage near where the radio would be. I wanted to go with something better but hasdn't had a chance to look at different systems or costs yet.
Thanks
Greg

Hey Anir,

If you can get Halon for $68 bucks - that's a great price - I don't even think Halon refills around here are that cheap. Halon is really not being made anymore so it is getting progressively more expensive.

As for the other toys, have fun. You should buy Lees stuff. YOu can get an extender too for the front of the BK mount from OG so you can have full seat mobility.

I still think Robert has an autoclave in his garage.

Anir-- I can't ship the extinguisher without running afoul of hazardous-cargo regs. Dealers can handle the expense under license, but this doesn't work for me.

Greg-- Sorry, I mis-understood your post. I went with a SPA Design 5 kg. electrical system, two zones. I don't recall the price off hand, but I think it was in the $500 range. I had the SPA on the RSR and was happy with it, although I'm sure there are many good alternatives. I mounted it in the spare-tire well in the boot.

Robert-- Yeah, you do have to plumb the Safety Devices system. I think if you're going to get a larger fire bottle, it makes sense to have two zones--and in the case of a Turbo, maybe three.

Inflammably Yours...

Anir,

Just pick it up at VIR in July. Lee, you are running Viper days at VIR with us in July right? There will be about 6 Pcar guys there.

EJ,
I don't think Anir can handle VIR, a 4000 foot back straight might tax his ticker too much. Already looking forward to that weekend.

I am already upset hes not playing at Mid Ohio next weekend, is he not coming to VIR either?

I want to tax my ticker in his car on the back straight.
