Question Is your horn loud enough?

After another near miss of a casual sunday driver , I wonder whether my horn is really loud enough. Is there a better, louder solution out there which fits to our P-Cars ??

Andrew,

Install the trumpet horn kit. Easy to do and IMO, quite a bit louder and 1000x better sounding than the Buick Century horns that are stock.

See: http://p-car.com/diy/horn/

I bought mine from Gert.

Perhaps that's another US v ROW difference. My car came standard with horns as far as I can tell.

The horns are the same since 1996. Mandated mostly by some EU contries (namely Switzerland) with stringent noise regulations.

Yet another reason to get a 95. Mine has real trumpet horns and I didn't have to pay extra at all.

I installed the trumpet horns this summer in my 97 Cab.
Question...
has anyone who's done this noticed they change tone the hotter it is outside? I used Robin Sun's install procedure. Has anyone a cure, as they do sound sick (but loud sick) when warm???

The change from the not great dual trumpets to the even worse dual disks was transitional from MY 95 to MY 96. Hence, my early build MY 96 has the trumpets. I'm sure the enclosed location in the R front fender significantly dampens the sound. Maybe air horns would do the trick!

1Gunner,

To quote Mr Spock from Star Trek, "that is not logical." I installed my horns last winter and used them this past spring and summer driving season and never noticed a difference in sound between cold or hot. And I have "played them" quite a bit on the back roads where I live - I like the way they sound.

Could be you have an intermittent electrical connection and once in a while only one of the horns actually sounds?

Trouble is, my ROW 95 already has the standard trumpets, but based on the lack of reaction I get from the intented recipients, I get the impression that the sound is loud enough. Bottom line..... they sound cute enough (wife opinion) from the drivers seat but are not loud enough or distintive to get the required attention where it counts.

Mike - are the trumpets from Gert the standard ROW product ?

Unhappy

I've just retrofitted mine with Gert's kit - unfortunately nowhere near the volume / attack of the Fiamm horns IIRC.....

Cheers, Maurice

Andrew,

I didn't realize that your car already had the "trumpet" horns. Yes, Gert's are factory p/n's. Sorry about that.

Anyway, they are a major improvement over the two "disc" horns here in the US.

A friend of my daughter has a Dodge Ram pickup truck with train horns mounted on the roof. You can hear those for five miles if the wind is right. Now where to mount the air compressor in the 993??

Mike,

I would definately stop short of mounting truck air horns . Perhaps a set of sidewinders might suffice......

I have the trumpet horns and they are not as loud as I would like...

Perhaps somebody can tell me how I can wire up a 2nd pair of trumpet horns?

Also, I have these horns

Click for details....

in my daily driver and like them. Maybe a touch louder than the trumpet horns, but still not loud enough. I think I'd really like 2 sets ( 4 total ) of the horns.

Jeff,

The horns are such intermittent duty, you could just use the existing wiring and parallel a second set of horns. The wiring is easy and I doubt if you'd ever have a fusing problem. The problem is finding a place to mount the second set in the RH front fender well. Its pretty tight in there now with one set of trumpet horns.

I have this disturbing picture of a guy driving down the back roads playing his horn for entertainment....... stuck in my head.
