Question Shifter install

Received a shifter I ordered from Tweeks, and the install should be simple enough....It is the boot plus the ****/shifter and it would seem to just install over the existing stem. The first step will be removing existing one. Does this involve disassembly of console ? Any experience ?
Thanks <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Jim,
You have to take the screws that hold the console out then hold the shifter and pull up, the **** will come off. then take the console out and replace the ****/boot with your new one and reverse the process.

Funny you should ask, I just emailed Robin a DIY article on R&R of the console. Only a part is applicable to swapping the shifter, but it should help you; I know I would've wanted the pictures! (1,000 words & all that).

Robin will hopefully have it posted in a day or two; I can send you a .zip in the meantime if you like.

Easy to do!

Boot: push down on the Driver's side of the leather near the edge.. It is pop down and loose
Push the leather more into the console and to the driver's side, the passenger side will come loose.

Manuever the rectangle up through the hole so it is above.

Now PULL on the shift know. YOU may have a hex key bolt, the "updgrade" ones did, which you will have to loose, but the standard one is just held with tight rubber gasket inside.

PULL UP! up and off:

ISTALL: place the new **** on the post. New one likely has a kex key bolt... tighten
manuever the rectangle frame of the leather into the hole, lift into place the passenger's side of the frame, position the driver's side and pull up until it snaps into place.

Help!! My old shifter **** won't lift up! No hex bolt visible....it just won't budge. I tried prying it up using a makeshift brace just to loosen it a bit, and that didn't work either. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

Mark:

My 98 993 shifter appeared to be glued in. Use a pair of vice grips on the plastic connector piece, squeeze to break the contact, twist and pull up. Got this idea from someone else in archives who had the same problem.

Gert had me put the the vise grips just below the **** on the metal shaft, and then use a screwdriver to pry it up. Even that took a long time to get it to move, but it finally came off. Yeah!
