Admittedly while my car spends a good amount of time in NJ, for my aircooled (and lately water-cooled) needs I go to no other than Peter Dawe @ Dawe's Motorsport. What an amazing operation, father and sons, with long history of racing (and engine building) experience. 15 miles from the DE Gap into PA. It's like Santa's workshop everytime I go there.
The car is not being sold by autohaus. It is at another dealer. I strongly recommended that he get a PPI and just need a good independent in the Gladstone NJ aresa
I use Gene with Autohaus for all of my Porsche related work. I wouldn't hesitate if it was air-cooled. He may work on the newer ones too (he worked on my 986 Boxster).
Otherwise, PowerTech in Rockaway, NJ is a very good second choice for a PPI. The PowerTech guys definitely know the water-cooled cars.
Gene is more of an artist. He'll look the car over and knows them really well. He's informal about how he does things, but does nothing but Porsches and knows them intimately. The PowerTech guys will have one of the techs in the shop follow a pre-set procedure and check-list. Which way makes more sense for your buddy?
Don't forget to stop by Cocoluxe when you're in Peapack Gladstone. Good luck with the PPI.

There are certain independents you'd want to use if you were buying a car and others you would want the buyer to use if you were selling a car. Gene falls into the later category if you get my drift. And I am speaking purely about PPIs and not questioning his knowledge or workmanship.

Powertech sees a ton of 996s. Mike Daino is one of the shop owners, talk to him.
Any of these are reliable and will do a decent job. I don't believe Rob and Gene have any alliance. There is also Protosport in Pompton Plains and Precision Motorsports in Long Valley. Any of these should do a good job for your friend.

I spoke with the Rob Francis in the past. Guy knows his stuff and great guy. He has an awesome selection of cars. When I was there several months ago he had some C4S s and they had high miles and little rough around the edges but original. Pricing was pretty normal. My Bro In Law lives in Mendham, NJ so I have visited allot of the Used High end dealers out there.
I know most of these guys for decades. I wouldn't recommend any of them if I questioned their ethics. No doubt there are some places in NJ I would say run from but nothing noted so far. I would still have a PPI done after all these are used cars and we all focus on different things.
