i got both. box S is a very nice car and much more comfortable than 993. 993 always smells like oil inside the cabin, noisy, ancient instrumentation, you really have to twist your wrist to operate the power windows. no storage space ..... hum... i can't think of one reason that 993 is "better" than boxster S. but you know what? i will keep my 993 forever and already sold my boxster S

The Boxter S is a fine car. My friend has one, I tease him all the time telling him its Porsche going after the chick market.
But it is a fun , fun car. That said. I would not buy one. Like said above. I am a 911 guy. LOVE MY 993. IMO the Greatest 911 ever made. As sports cars go. If there were no more 993s, Id then move on to a.....996 and learn to love it some how?
Boxter has just never done if for me......Oh and I am completely unbiased!!

Decisions decisions. I have a 964 and its starting to cost money.. oil leak and other minor stuff. Will the 993 be more realiable ? Hey ,I want a 993TT and a boxster S. Any investors out there who can give me a loan to get both cars and take 10 years to repay ? ;-)
Thanks for all your inputs, though

silver bullet, that's a good one.
yea, i bought one off this guy who lives right off laguna seca.
he doesn't drive it much and it's in great shape. even better now after 20 hours of detailing starting at 3:00am on halloween. oh, this guy's name is kim, aka silver bullet. perhaps you know him?
pix? when suwipin swings by this weekend to render his professional photography skills, i will post them!

993 or 986s????
no contest for me. i'd do the 993. giving my 986 2.7 to my sister... as the car has depreciated soooooooo much (too many on the market) was a 60k car & i'd be pressed to get 30k now. the 986's seem to be traveling down the same road as the 944/968's etc (making them prob. the best used car buy around) just kills you if you buy new... & still stings even if you've got cash to blow. whereas the type 911's value seem to hold up better over time. if i did a 986 again, i'd get a used '03"s" next year to avoid some of the sting.
re: driving experience... you're the judge. me? i love the "snap" of the 993. the boxster for me is nice & fun but just does not reach the places the 993 does. last of the hand-builds too. btw: my 993 does not smell like oil & is actually equal in comfort (for me).
also, i plan on keeping the 993 cab & getting a 993tts next year. -- bottom line: it's personal taste.
either way--->
buy one soon or die bored!

Cloud964,
No-one seems to have mentioned this:
You walk out into the parking lot after a hard days work, knackered and genarally down. You see YOUR car sitting there waiting for you, gleaming, those wide arches looking like J-Lo from behind, the classic shape and twin pipes, you smile a smug grin. You get in and your RSR's burble into life and suddenly life is magnificent.
or
you walk out in to the lot and get in your Boxster and wave at the 1000s of other Boxter owners who bought their car because it was either that or a Audi TT, Honda2000 or BMW Z3/4. Nothing special no grin factor.
Finally, eveyone turns their head in appreciation and looks at my 993 as I growl down the road, kids give me the thumbs up and stop me to ask for a lift to school. I doubt that I would get the same reactions from any other porsche including the new 996 (GT3 and Turbo's included).
Buy what your heart wants, your head can rule when your heart doesn't care anymore.

1. Nobody hasn't mentioned the fact that Boxster is not suitable for driver over 6" (I do not know if this is the case with you). The engine is behind your back and you can't go further with the seat as you can in the 911. Also, 911 has the 2 small seats on the rear, which are sometimes useful.
2. 986 and 911 are different class cars. 986 is entry-level Porsche for people how do not yet have the money for 911. IMO the year of the Porsche never matters - the car does (for example 1987 959 is faster than 2004 CGT 0-60mph).
3. 986 is easier to drive, as is 996 compared to 993. Still I think The 993 is the One (after 959 of course).
4. Design - 986 is beautiful, but 993 is super-duper.
5. How rich are you? 993's have seen their depreciation, Boxsters will still suffer on that (and more than 993 ever does).
