Hi Rennlisters,
I've searched for something on this subject but couldn't find anything, so my apologies if this is one of those things that has been discussed to death already.
The AC head unit, center console switch surrounds, and console inserts on my '96 C4S do not appear to be truly black. I don't know if this is the original color or it is due to fading, but I suspect the latter. Here's an enhanced photo that exaggerates the effect:

I've tried various "back-to-black" and other interior care products, but none of these help, in fact some probably magnify the difference. Has anyone else run into this, and if so did you find any way to restore the black?
I can obviously replace the console inserts by ordering them from Gert, but the AC head unit probably won't be so simple unless the faceplate is available separately. Replacing the entire unit seems to be an expensive way to fix a cosmetic problem. Removing it and painting it might be possible, but getting a good match (not too flat or shiny) might be tougher.
Any thoughts on this are greatly appreciated, including the "don't worry about it, all of our 993's look like this" response.
Cheers!

Skip,
There are two "fix" for this:
1. There is an item call "Bumper and Trim Recondition" from Griot's Garage.
2. Wear a shade everytime you drive, the darker the better.

Skip...under certain lighting conditions, those parts always have a brownish tint (not nearly as bad as your enhanced photo)
Normal--part of the its character.

The color in my always garaged coupe is a bit brownish, but nothing like yours. Did you happen to try the original "Black Again," a liquid in a white plastic container which is cured by UV exposure. It's by far the best such product I've ever used, but the original company went out of business several years ago. Another company bought the name, but the new product is inferior. I'm down to about 1/3 bottle.
If you haven't tried it and would like to, I can mail you a little (goes a long way) in some type of small container.

The stuff to use is "Forever Black". This is bascially shoe polish or paint with an aplicator.
I use it to cover dried wax on trim (exterior) and to hid the scuffs on the dash board under the ignition and door pulls( Black interior). Be careful on the application... clean exess off quickly.![](http://www.performanceproducts.com/Assets/product_content/Forever%20Black/48APA114E.jpg)
""Professional used car lots don’t have time to touch-up rubber trim and bumpers every few weeks. They have a secret called Forever Black. Tired-looking rubber must first be properly prepared with this deep cleaning formula, followed by an application of UV-blocking Forever Black.
