My black 993 brake calipers shed their clear coat and a crappy paint job by the PO, and I finally got tired of looking at them when cleaning the car and wheels.

I invested in 8 stainless brake bleed screws, 2 cans of VHT high heat, yellow caliper paint and 1 can of VHT high heat, caliper clear coat. One set of high heat "PORSCHE" vinyl decals and a silicone tapered plug set for plugging ports and threaded holes. I also purchased 4 allen head cap screw mounting fasteners for the front brake calipers. The rears are OK to reuse.

I had a left over can of paint stripper from a previous job, and some old caliper dust boots to test for negative effect to paint stripper, which passed with flying colors!

Each caliper was completely stripped of its hardware to be subjected to a dremel wire wheel cleaning, with the calipers undergoing two baths of stripper and a wire brush scrubbing; followed by a good hosing down to neutralize the acid in the stripper. Then some 200 grit wet n dry sanding.

Finally, I masked the dust boots and caliper pistons, and wiped each caliper with brake cleaner and acetone as a paint prep.

After painting and drying for a day, each caliper was baked in the oven @ 200° for 1 hour, per VHT instruction, with the decal application after cooling.

Lastly was a single coat of clear to seal the decal and complete the refinish job.

Following reinstallation, I pressure bled all 4 corners in the correct sequence. I'll post a few more pics after the wheels are installed...All the effort is in the prep!

Looks fantastic. I need to go the SS brake line route as well. I also suffered the dreaded peeling of the original clear coat. Because I wasn't changing color, I was fortunate to just peel remaining clear coat, wet sand lightly and reconstruction with hi temp clear.

Thanks for the positive comments fellas...Here is the list of items I sourced for the job.

BTW, time and attention to detail really is the combination for a desireable outcome. I would say if you're in a rush or have a tendency to want to cut corners, you might want to leave the job to a profession refinisher. More final notes and details when I post final photos in a couple of days.

P.S. The paint stripper I used can be sourced at your local home improvement store, and I suspect aircraft stripper would be better. However, I was concerned about how it may affect the boots. Thanks to Foxman for verifying there is no detrimental effect to using aircraft paint stripper.

Note As a kid, I worked with my buddies for a couple of months, stripping aircraft at Long Beach airport. I quickly learned that stripper came in three flavors back then. Low, Medium and Hotashell.

The low temp would eventually start to mildly sting; the medium you could feel in about 30 seconds, and the hot was immediate (Gimme some water to wash this s* it off my skin, kinda hot.

All ports were plugged proir to stripping, rinsing, sanding and re-rinsing. After drying, I pulled the hydraulic port plugs and thoroughly washed the internals with brake cleaner, blowing dry with compressed air. I did not re-insert the plugs until I had baked for 1 hr @ 100° to dry the internals.

Final step, prior to paint, was to wipe clean all surfaces to be painted with acetone, and only handle the caliper with fresh clean latex surgical gloves, or the equivelent. (Got the two boxes of 100 gloves from Costco) From this point on, and when applying the decal, I only handled the calipers with a fresh pair of gloves.

(This is an awesome price for SS bleed screws compared to other sources) I did look at speedbleeder, bleed screws but the price for the stainless product was excessive, IMHO. I did buy a small bottle of the bleed screw thread sealant.

I THINK PORSCHE MAY BE LEANING ON SELLERS OR MORE LIKELY EBAY, FOR THE UNAUTHORIZED SELLING OF "PORSCHE" DECALS. Both of my sources have dried up in the past month.
