Default Cigarette lighter socket loose...

Hey guys - Happy New Year 2017!

My first "993 Project" in the new year needs to be repairing my cigarette lighter socket so as my trickle charger doesn't fall out. It's simply loose.

Any ideas on how to tighten it up without replacing it?

Failing that here is my Suncoast replacement option: https://www.suncoastparts.com/produc...23070001C.html

TIA (Thanks in advance).

P.s. Once I've "tackled" this I doing the top end next!

P.S. Once you've "tackled" this, you may want to do some extensive "searching" prior to doing the top end next!

Happy New Year!

I know it may be convenient, but I don't get, why anyone wouldn't consider putting a pigtail on their battery. Direct charging, no fumbling with older lighter socket, and its a cleaner way. :-)

I totally agree. I just haven't got that far but that is a solid idea. The device I am using is not per say a charger but the Porsche Battery Maintainer.

Question - can you hard wire in the Battery Maintainer Claps for easy hook-up?

The reason it is loose is it is a different size from modern sockets. Some offer a sleeve that slides over your charger's plug and takes up the play in the socket, this can also be made as a DIY project. Others simply put rubber bands or a couple o-rings over the plug as a spacer. Others do nothing. If you change the socket your dash will now not accept the OE lighter your car came with.

Sometimes knowing what not to fix is a daunting conclusion.

That was a "Deltran Battery Tender" (which I have had good luck with), but whatever charger/maintainer you buy, should have the pigtail, and clamps included.

I think the Deltran Battery Tender is a quality device.
I've had mine for over 15 yrs., and God only knows how many times I've yanked it off its perch and onto the cement.

The Battery Tender takes a licking and keeps on ticking, er ah, humming n charging.

I've had good luck with CTEK chargers. Have a pigtail on all my fun vehicles and I just rotate a charger sround the garage.

I had the same problem with a loose fitting which needed to be held in place whilst removing whatever was in there, say a navigation device.

It is a bitch to replace, you'll need to remove your radio and have the patience of a saint to get the new one in. The trick is getting it aligned properly to slide in so the tabs can lock and fit the power leads. It is usually the plastic tabs that break off causing to fitting to be loose. Good luck.

I think it's now CLEAR the the pigtail bolted on the battery is without question the way to go!

Thanks everyone.

Cheers for 2017!
