Steering rack Repair vs Replace
There is no chrome plating on the shaft. It is polished.
If your shaft has corrosion and pitting on it, the only way to fix it is to fill the damaged area via welding. Then the extra material is turned down on a lathe, followed by a light grind and polish on the lathe.
Any experienced steering rack shop can do this, as this is the standard process to fix any steering shaft.

Any rack rebuilder has to deal with corrosion pitting on the rack shaft as a normal part of their service. Added metal is welded in place . It is then ground and polished to finish out the shaft.
The 993 rack is made by ZF and is similar but not identical to many of the racks a rebuilder will see so any rebuilder can fix it. Be sure that if you send your rack out you record the serial number and make it clear to the rebuilder that you want your specific rack rebuilt not one from his inventory of cores as the cores can be in poor shape and so have a short service life as a rebuilt rack.
Use care packing your rack for shipping. Consider slipping a small hose over the steering column spline so it does not become damaged in shipment.

Good to hear. My rack is leaking and will need a rebuild sometime soon, I suppose I'll send it to Advantage for the job. The cost is around $900, correct? Just need to see if I can extract the steering rack myself on my Quickjack.
