Gearing is influenced by the rear tires only.

Does not help bad spacing BETWEEN gears, but overall makes the tall stock 993 gearing less obnoxious all other things equal.

285.30 is a shorter tire, OD less than 25 inches.

I remember Joel Reiser used to recommend the 285.30 before it became less common/supplanted with 295's and other sizes less suited to a 993.

If you have stock gearing and 285 is available in the tire you want, it's a good option, of course subject to all of the previous comments about front to rear stagger. Wider rear ideally needs a wider front.

Cheers

Good info! Thanks. So, here's my dilemma....my car is 100% street driven. For my Fikse FM10's spec'd 18x8 ET50 and 18x10 ET60, i've narrowed it down to 2 possible setups.

MPSS's (this was the tire i was set on before considering sizing - def the better tire of the 2) - 225/40 & 265/35

Conti Extreme DW - 235/40 & 285/30 (MPSS's aren't available in these sizes) - will i have fitment issues with the above rim offsets? Car is lowered to around Euro M030 height.

What do you guys think?

Using Enkei RC5 front 18x8.5 ET54 and rear 18x10 ET60 no fitment issues at all with 225/40; 285/30 Bridgestone tires on lowered Bilstein HD suspension and M033 springs.

btw I've used Conti Extreme DW tires, not on the 993 but on my g/f's Mini Cooper S and wasn't overly impressed by its cornering capabilities and grip.

So what are the downsides to running a 225 front and 285 rear? More oversteer or understeer? Is that the reason to go to a 235 in front?

MPSS is a better tire than Conti DW...and I have the Conti DW currently on the C4S.

Definitely.

But the Conti DW (not the same as DWS all-season) is still a good summer tire for sure. Comes down to intended usage. For street use, it rode really well in 16" on my 3.2. Quiet, plenty good grip in dry and wet. Soft sidewall, so you will not get super responsive handling.

Not a track tire, but again, depends on what you are looking for. For cruising around or highway miles, it's solid.

And coming full circle here, I would personally go with the Michelin SS in the stock sizes above. A GREAT tire, why overthink it.

Cheers

And for clarity, if you have an 8.5 inch front, a 235 will do nicely.

I am scoping out a set of 235/265 for spring - just curious on what Michelin has in store as I understand the SuperSport is in fact being replaced. If I go ahead with these, I'd probably order 4 rears.

Cheers

It is. Was just researching this today. It's being replaced by the PS4S. Unfortunately when it's released in March, only 19's and 20's will be available. 18's will surely follow but who knows when. I'm going to wait til march to see if more info is released on 18's. thanks again.

How very interesting. Tire Rack has a page for Hankook R-S4 with pricing and sizing. And 235/40-18 is there at $200, along with 265/35-18 for $247. Don't know if it's going to be anywhere as good as RE-71R, but worth thinking about.

On the other hand, I woudn't expect the availability till spring, if not June-July.
