Default Special tool

My fan belt broke today and I have done the search. But what is the tool that holds the alternator from turning as you take off the 24 mm nut ? the search came up with a 10mm 12 point spline tool. The question is can you get this tool at an auto parts store or only from Porsche? Oh "P car" says the tool is 999 571 052 02

Thanks

Buzz,
The same thing happened to me recently.
Check out the thread called "broken belt" in the current threads for more info.
Here's a great DIY-- http://p-car.com/diy/vbelt/

As for the special shaft tool, I used one that my father had. He didn't get it from Porsche and can't remember where he bought it but thinks that it might have been snap-on. It was a socket attachment.

Before I found out that my father had the tool , I had called the local dealer and they said they could order one for $28 but did not stock them.

Good luck,
Gary

Default The tool comes standard in all 964 tool kits

Try to find a 964 buddy that lives near You and borrow his. They never came in the 993 kit, go figure...

I got a set of four 12 point spline tools at Kragen, one of which is the correct size. The only catch is that the Kragen tool is too long and you have to cut it in half. If you have a metal cutoff saw or a grinder with a metal cutoff blade, it is a 1 minute operation. The set of 4 tools was approx. $15 - $19.

I bought the KD tool #2305 referenced in Bill Noble's how-to on Robin's p-car.com site. Found it in a local auto parts store, about $5.00. You do have to use a dremel tool or hacksaw to cut it shorter, as he describes.

Another option is to upgrade the alternator/fan pulley to the RS single pulley. After installed, it elimates the need for the special tool to replace your fan belt. In fact, it makes it much, much easier to replace the fan belt if it breaks. You can actually use standard nuts to R/R the belt instead of all those specialized tools.

With your setup, the fun really starts when you try to get the fan belt pulley off.. Those 3 5MM bolts are a PITA.

Autozone also carries a set of 12 point drive tools, I had to cut down the 10mm to get it to fit.

If the bolts are stuck on the fan pulley, as Jeff hinted at, your best bet is to remove the shroud and band clamp, tilt the alternator up (leave it connected) and get at those bolts with an impact driver. Guess how I know?

Just make sure you get the right tool.

If not.... this could happen to you...
