Default Damnit....another issue!

So I was stressing over a minor oil leak and created the thread below. After posting that thread I decided to take the car for a drive. When I did the top end I also replaced the oil pressure sending unit as my readings per the gauge seemed kind of low. Never under 1 and the low oil light never came on however it struggled to reach 5 when on it a bit (usually around 4-4.5 bar on the oil pressure gauge). So after replacing the oil pressure sending unit, all was good. Solid 5 bar on anything after 3K rpm. Fast forward a few months later, seemed like the oil pressure gauge would kind of bounce around a bit at idle (2-2.5 bar and bouncing around a bit). Hmm, kind of weird but whatever. Yesterday driving I noticed that although the car was fully warmed up, the gauge read at 3 bar at idle (usually at 2 bar at idle fully warmed up). Thought to myself the new oil pressure sending unit was maybe faulty.

That brings me to today. Car started and drove perfect. After driving for a bit I looked down at the gauge and noticed that at 3K and cruising, the oil pressure gauge was barely at 4 bar. Pushing it further up the rev range it would barely go over 4 bar. ****!! 3 minutes from my house, sitting at the stop light I see the pressure dropping from 2 bar at idle slowly towards 1 bar (no oil pressure light). Took off from the light and the gauge wouldn't go past 2 bar (barely)!!! WTF!!!!! Car idled and ran fine, no smoke or catastrophic oil leak!

I hope to god its just a faulty oil pressure sending unit. Hope its not the oil pump!

Ughhhh! Don't want to risk driving it to the repair shop so will most likely get it towed on Monday! I was going to put it away for the winter on sunday but cant leave it as such! I wouldn't be able to sleep for the next 6 months!

Maybe invest in an engine mounted, analog gauge. Cheap insurance, and instant feedback.

I hope you didn't replace the old oil pressure sender unit with a Uro branded one.

I don't believe so. The shop that did the work said they would use nothing but OEM porsche parts. I guess I'll find out soon!

My money is on a bad sender, or bad connection.

Don't stress out. It's gonna be ok.

Default Few things more stressful..

Sort of like thinking you are going into congestive heart failure. I never trusted the OP, Oil Temp or the oil level indicator. No Hi-Jack intended, but here is how I approached the potential problem:

I addressed two out of three putting in an AiM MXL-2 dash....it's installed in front of the former position of the tach. I upgraded from the G Dash to the MXL-2....not cheap, but peace of mind, what's that worth? Plenty in my book. See: http://www.aimsports.com/products/mxl-chooser.html

With an older car, yes my 1997 993 is older, nearly 20 now, the OBD II is relatively slow, Hz wise, so I needed to buy OP and OT sensors. They need to be installed, and you'll need a competent person to do it. But once it's done, you'll have accurate OP, Oil Temp...and oil level, well that's going to have to wait. Conceptually, the oil level data could be captured and displayed...I need to ask my AiM guy about this.

I sincerely hope you find the OP culprit and get this worry out of your head. 5 Bar for life!!!!

Quick update. Had the car towed in and all is good. They put a mechanical guage on it and it read 5 bar over 2800 rpm. They said it was a faulty oil pressure sending unit and are replacing it under warranty.

Lol, would love to oblige, but that will have to wait until she comes back from Continental where she is getting some fixes to minor paint issues with their recent respray...

Hey Ginch
Sorry to jump in so late on your top end rebuild, but just wondering how different you found the motor response after you got it back and who did you use to rebuild it?

Cheers
