motorsound option
I had a customer come into my shop with a 98 c2s that had the motorsound option, it sounded pretty cool. I guess you get an airbox and tips for around $400? I can get it at wholesale. Is it worth it, or should I just buy a Weltmeister box and some a/m tips?

I have the Weltmeister airbox lid and RSR mufflers. The RSR mufflers are outstanding at giving the engine that low growl at all RPM's. Very, very good sound.
The Weltmeister airbox lid provides some nice intake noise when you really get on the throttle. Just driving around town you don't notice the sound, however at wide open throttle conditions it sounds great. And when you get to around 5500 RPM the sound just fills your head with all sorts of good vibrations.
With Robin's mufflers I began to really enjoy the car as it sounded like a real 911. With the airbox lid I began to really enjoy driving the car at WOT and at high RPM's...well I always did like driving that way, but now the sound makes it all the more sweet.

That $400 set up your talking about is just a perforated airbox lid, and two chrome tips. It IS NOT a full Motorsound set up. It is just what Porsche sells as a Motorsound upgrade - over the counter.
Motorsound mufflers have different internals compared to standard mufflers. The mufflers do not come with that above $400 kit.
I always thought that $400 kit should have been called "Motorsound look."
The perforated airbox lid does add a nice sound when your "giving it the boot" though!

I can't say from experience, but I remember reading on here a while back that it is actually the Motorsound package mufflers that are the main contributor to the "better" sound that comes from the package...not the airbox cover.

Hi fellow airheads. I agree with the drilled out airbox and Robins mufflers. Great combo of sounds at hi and low rpms, like I am ever at low rpms, ha!! When I start her up in the morning she just growls at me, and when she warms up and I crank on her, she wails-like a great partner should. Larry

The newer Porsches are embarrassingly quiet. I watch standard 996s and Boxters zip SILENTLY through an autocross while all the other cars sound normal or good or great.
The Motor Sound option in my 993 makes my autocrosses so much more fun! I don’t like ear busting noise but you cannot have real sports car fun without some exhaust music.

OK, really dumb question possibly: Is it okay to drill the holes into a 993 TT airbox?
If so what is the best way to get at it?

No. If you drill the airbox, you will be sucking in hot air after it has gone through the intercooler. There is a snorkle like pipe that should connect to your airbox and lead to the top of the spoiler bypassing the intercooler. You don't want hot air ingested - definatley defeats the purpose.
If you want to see the snorkle thing, do a search as I think Robin has posted pics in the past - might try his site too.

To add one more element to the mix...Robin worked his magic on my factory Motorsound mufflers, and boy do they sound awesome! <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />
