Miraculix,

Don't feel bad asking. If you hadn't ever done this then you wouldn't know how to do it.

If you have your manual, it will tell you how to do the job.

If not:

-Open your front trunk
-Pull the carpet back on each side
-You will see a gold lever held in place by a big black clip
-Push the clip over and release the lever
-Swing the lever back towards the windshield
-Grab the headlight assembly in your hand and pull it out. If it doesn't slide out easily, wiggle the lever back and forth at the same time you pull the headlight out
-Flip the headlight over and remove the bail on the back of the assembly
-Pull off the gray back cover and you will now see where the bulbs are.
-Unclip the little bails and remove the bulbs
-BE careful NOT TO TOUCH THE NEW BULBS WITH YOUR FINGERS, THE OIL WILL CAUSE THE BULB TO BURN OUT SOONER THAN NORMAL.
-Reverse the procedure to put them back in.

Also, while your lights are out, you may want to clean the headlight lenses.
To do this go to Robin's site and see the DIY for this.

Good luck.

Evan.

this is the gold lever Evan was talking about. Release it from the black plastic retainer and push it back 180 degrees then push it forward until it sticks up again. Headlight will pop out. Rest is fairly straightforward.

As Evan said make sure you never touch the glass of the halogen bulbs with your fingers!

OUt of curiosity, are you fixing a broken bulb or 'upgrading' somehow? Either way, Philips VisionPlus seems to be the best replacement bulb.

DON'T go to a 100W bulb without changing the wiring, etc. It's probably not worth it.

Graham - Thanks for adding the picture - worth a 1000 words!

After reading your post on what are these items, I was hoping Thomas would read it and see the pics, but you were one step ahead and posted it here.

BTW - I just installed 55W Osram Silver Stars and they work great. My next step is to try out 75W PIAA Extreme Whites for the highs. (I think they only generate the heat of a 55 watt, at least I was told)

My independent has installed 100W highs in several 993 without issues, heat, harness, etc.. Just food for thought. I am not sure about the 100's yet.

I bought extra strong ones beacuse it'll make them look "whiter", that's what the dealer said..

Thomas, should be 55W Philips VisionPlus.

Evan, a 75W bulb will generate more heat assuming that it is the same technology but you probably won't have a problem.

By the way, something subtle happens when you stick a 100W bulb in instead of a 55W bulb. The resistance of the bulb is much lower, and the current drawn through both the cable and the bulb is higher. Net result is that the wiring will dissipate a lot more heat and the voltage across the 100W bulb will be less than for a 55W bulb. When the voltage drops on a bulb, even by a small amount, the light output can be reduced significantly.

I remember reading a test somewhere in which someone measured LESS light from a 100W bulb due to this effect, plus MORE heat. The exact opposite of what you want. This is the reason that it is recommended to upgrade the cables feeding the bulbs if you increase the wattage.

Want to do me a favor - and fix your "headlight" avatar? Staring directly into them - they are somewhat "blinding"... Please save it for use in the yet to be announced "RennPorn" discussion forums...

Thanks
