[quote]So here's my question: how do so many who own such a brilliant piece of machinery resist driving it everyday?

Seen the roads in Pittsburgh? Seen our weather? Ever drive in ice/snow/heavy rain with a lot of muddy water runoff? A4 Quattro more suited to that (and with sport susp. can have fun with it, too).

Why drive it 20 minutes into work, leave it outside in an unprotected lot (where there HAVE been cars stolen) for 9-10 hours, then either drive home or to some stupid mall or supermarket and park it there? To have some numnut in a SUV or mini-van open their door into it, or roll a shopping cart into the side? No thanks!!!

By the way; I got my '95 993 in Feb '96 with 3800 miles on it. I now have over 62,000 on the odo. So, when it comes out of the garage, it gets DRIVEN!!!!

Bah! Your car is a garage queen, Calvo. I got my '98 993 in Feb '98 with 17 miles on it. I now have over 61,000 miles on the odo.

Shut off the computer and go driving, numnuts!

DJ, that's a good one!

Question: does anyone know any good places to drive around Miami area?

There's no country roads here, and for sure, they are not twisty and don't even talk about hills

Hey Finn,

Long time no chat. When are you going to do a driving event with me? Those are the only real roads down here in s. florida.

But on an off track weekend when I feel I must drive drive drive my 911, I head for the keys.

Granted most of the roads are straight but, they are single lane roads and a beautiful view.
(It's better than driving on I-95) I usually will drive past the Tiki bar and get some lunch south of Island Morada, then drive back home.

There is also a great road on this route. It's the toll road. I'm not sure exactly where it is but if you keep your eyes up, you'll see it.

Let me know if you want to take a drive some weekend, maybe we can get a Pcar convoy on the move

B

p.s.- as much as I would like to drive my car everyday, it's my weekend track car. My commute to work is 3 miles and my office doesn't have great parking. I don't like leaving it in the street. It's definately not a garage queen though. I put her through the paces almost once a month at the track all year long.

Hi Finn,

You mean you don't have one of these in Florida?

I'm just teasing you Finn

I drive my Porsche 35 miles each way to work and even though its a bit of stop and go traffic (101N to South San Francisco) the only thing that makes the drive bearable is being in the Porsche. It's a truly depressing day for me when my wife isn't working and I have to take the Honda instead.

I thought the best stretch of road near Miami was called Moroso.

And if you were willing to drive for a few more hours, there is an interesting 3.7 mile stretch of concrete and asphalt just east of Sebring, Florida

Chevrolet ran an advertisement for the Corvette in '63 somewhere under the title: "He takes a vacation twice a day" (I got it on a CD with advertisements for the Corvette). That's how I feel driving to work in my 993. Sometimes, the only reason I want to go to work is because it gives me the opportunity to drive the car legitimately (vs the wife). Only hope that the car park at work remains as empty as it is now. If that changes for the worse, I'll have to rethink the Porsche commute.

Cool

Edward,

I tend to agree with you about daily driving. I purchased my 95 in Dec and have the pleasure of putting it on the interstate 105 miles each and every day. Fortunately for me it is in the So. Oregon hill country so it's a mind clearing 75 mph romp morning and afternoon. I personally believe these cars were built to be driven and it would be a crime to have it in the garage for more that 8 hours at a time.

Well, my 993 sometimes sits in the garage for more than 8 hours at a time, but it does get a fair amount of use! I live and work in a small town where I can walk many places, but I make excuses to drive my Porsches whenever I can! The 993 has to compete with 2 other Porsches for driving time, but it gets the most as the Boxster is primarily a track car and the 928 is being fixed-up. I enjoy all three, but the 993 ranks at the top and would be the one to keep if I only kept one.

I typically put 7000 to 10000 miles on my vehicles each year, with the 993 probably in the 3000 to 5000 mile range. It was six years old and had 48000 miles on it when I bought it, so I'm running it about the same or a bit less than the POs did. It looks fantastic, and I'm pretty much a nut about cleaning, polishing, waxing, and detailing my cars. They look like garage queens, but they're not! I believe that cars are meant for driving, not sitting around just looking pretty.

<- For all who use their 993's as they should be used!

Jeez, I would think just the opposite. I used to commute 25 miles each way on 101 in bumper-to-bumper stop and go. It felt like I was putting 500 miles of wear on the clutch every day. Then I got to park in the compact spaces at work and add to my collection of door dings. And even worse than creeping along at 2 miles an hour is if by miracle, traffic clears and I get to slam my wheels through Northen California road craters at 65 mph. Maybe in some parts of California the roads are decent, but I've seen brand new pavement in Norcal become a minefield in just a year.
