After finding that dreaded fluid in the otherwise spottless garage floor I had to come to grips with the sad fact it's time to replace the power steering rack. Local shop Porsche dealer quoted $1,441.00 including parts, labor, and alignment. I'm hoping somebody can give me a link to a better parts price and tell me how much is fair for labor. I'm uncomfortable with the though of a rebuilt unit unless someone out there can convince me to reconsider. Thanks for any insight or suggestions.

Have you seen this page from p-car.com? It gives prices for rebuilt units and of course the full DIY instructions.

It seems you could do the whole job yourself for around $300 + labour with a core exchange and rebuilt unit.

I have heard the rebuild units aren't so good. I paid (well, insurance did) more when mine needed replaced.

Get a factory rebuilt (ZF, I think) instead of 3rd party rebuilt. I went through 5 rebuilts for my 951S before getting a factory rebuilt unit that would work properly.

My first Vertex rebuilt (factory) rack lasted less than a year before it started to spew copious amounts of fluid at one of the mating surfaces (not at the shaft seals). The second (warranty replacement) rebuilt rack seems to be better (so far-fingers crossed).

I paid $919 for a ZF Remanufactured rack installed, so $1400 is quite high. Make sure your rack is "remanufactured", not "rebuilt" or just "reconditioned".
The differences is that remanufactured is a complete overhaul of the internals of the unit where any parts that have the possibility of being worn down is replaced with a new part. Rebuilt is where only visibly worn or damaged parts are replaced.

Tueday I paid $455.99 for a remanufactured unit (lifetime warranty) at AutoZone with a $160.00 core charge. Joe L and I installed it Wednesday. Neither of us are all that mechanically inclined. It takes patience, but it is not brain surgery. At www.vertexauto.com you can get the 964 unit for less than $400.00
